The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Offline files, cached credentials, and VPN

Asked by PHFrench in Virtual Private Networking (VPN), Windows Vista

Tags: , , , ,

Since starting with Vista several months ago on my work laptop I have experienced a strange and very frustrating occurance - my domain account is almost immediately locked out whenever I connect to our corporate VPN. The VPN is non-microsoft and uses authentication local to the VPN appliance itself. We use Microsoft's built-in VPN connection tool.

After a bit of troubleshooting, I have determined that the problem is my use of "Offline Files." I have the "My Documents" folder redirected to a server share and it is configured to be available offline. When away from the office I login to my laptop using cached domain credentials and then launch a VPN connection. The domain (and therefore the file server with the share I am trying to sync with) does not recognize the cached credentials and rejects the sync. It tries this several times in a row and locks me out.

If I disable offline files then I do not get locked out when I connect via VPN.

I can also connect to VPN, run a "net use" command to the file server, map a drive supplying new credentials, and have everything work OK. While this is a form of work around it seems ridiculous to have to map a drive every time I connect to the VPN.

HERE IS MY QUESTION: How do I need to configure my PC, my offline files, and anything else in order to be able to VPN into the network, have offline files work properly, and not get my account locked out?
