We are having an issue with accessing the network when we VPN to our office. We can access the server we VPN into (SBS 2003, and the Windows XP VPN client), but not the other servers on the network and we also can not access the internet (open web pages with IE for example). We can only access shares and application on the VPN server till we disconnect the VPN, then we again have internet access.
It sounds like you have not configured your SBS according to it's documented methods. Did you run the Configure Remote Access Wizard? Have you joined other servers to the domain using the steps outlined in http://sbsurl.com/addserver?
Please post a COMPLETE ipconfig /all from the SBS.
Hey Jeff, I did run the "Configure Remote Access Wizard" and I re-ran it. I am also having this issue in an office with only one server (they are not able to browse the internet while connected to the VPN). Here is a COMPLETE ipconfig /all. Thanks for all your help.
Generally, if you use the SBS Connection Manager it will use the Gateway on the Remote Network for your Internet access. This means that while connected, all Internet traffic will flow through the SBS.
If you create a manual VPN connection in Windows XP, you can disable this by opening up the properties of the connection > Networking Tab > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > Advanced, and unchedk the "Use default gateway on remote network" box.
But that wouldn't explain why you cannot browse the other servers on the network. For that, I'd suggest that you try making the VPN connection BEFORE logging onto Windows. You do this by checking the "log on using dial-up connection" box on the Windows Logon screen. You can then establish the VPN before logging onto Windows which will allow the remote network to display in My Network Places.
If that doesn't fix things for you, please also provide an IPCONFIG /ALL from both your home machine as well as one of the other servers on the domain.
Jeff, I know it has been a while on this one, but it got put on the back burner for a while, but is becoming an issue again. Here is the IP Config for my machine at home...
I am able to ping the server 10.1.1.241, but when I try to connect to it (\\10.1.1.241) is takes a VERY long time then I get the error "Unable to conntect to 10.1.1.241. Server Service not started" or that the server is no longer available.
This is really getting to be a problem and any help would be great.
I changed the DNS Suffix in the posting so as to not post my clients network info on the internet. dataserver1's IP has not changed. It is still 10.1.1.240. 10.1.1.241 is Dataserver2.
