The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

questions on cisco asa 5505 firewall

Asked by williamstechnologygroup in Virtual Private Networking (VPN), Networking Hardware Firewalls, Cisco PIX Firewall

Hello,
I have some questions regarding a cisco asa5505 firewall and the asdm GUI software that comes with it. I service mostly small businesses with between 10-20 pc's. Most of these clients are fine with the typical soho routers from linksys and netgear that have simple yet effective configuration interfaces. However, I have this one client who is a larger client who is housing medical images on a windows 2003 server (not a DC). He has requested that port 80 be open so users can go to a webpage that is running on the server for a web based application. We also need vpn tunnels setup to download images from remote locations to the server. I was told to get a "real" firewall not the soho units. I was also told to get a firewall with built in vpn instead of taxing the server with routing and remote access....I do not have any experience with the command line interface of the traditional cisco firewalls/routers. I was told that the asdm interface was easy to use on the new asa cisco units and that I wouldn't have a problem. Well, every time I've tried to make the necessary adjustments I've had to call Cisco support and the tech guys just remote in and start using the command line interface to fix and configure (ugh!) I tell them that the reason I purchased the unit was so that I DIDN"t have to use a command line interface. The first time was to setup the port forwarding of port 80 to the server ip, which the tech did thru command line and then showed me how to do it in the asdm. The next time,  I tried to setup the vpn using the vpn wizard software and was getting all kinds of errors when trying to commit the changes, I  called a tech and found out that the web based interface has problems and we used the locally installed asdm laucher app on my laptop and was able to save it. I then had users try to login to the vpn, but they are all getting an error 800 unable to establish vpn connection. I now have to go back and try to figure out what went wrong. The tech walked me thru the vpn wizard, so I cant imagine that it was done improperly. I just don't understand why I'm having these issues.
I noticed that best buy is starting to carry some of Cisco's "linksys business line" which are more robust firewalls than the little blue plastic linksys soho models.

MY QUESTION IS: What exactly is the difference/advantages of getting a cisco PIX or ASA firewall vs. one of these middle of the line cisco firewalls at best buy? Can I still do the basic VPN and is the firewall still secure? Am I overbuying with the cisco asa for this application? I'm ready to send the ASA unit back and get one of the cisco/linksys business class units....Start Free Trial
