OK here's the deal~
I'm setting up a laptop, its an HP/Compaq 6710b, I took it out of the box, repartitioned and formatted the drive to remove all the useless software that was installed on it.
Fresh install of XP, all windows updates successful, installed appropriate applications (e.g Office, Skype, MSN, Aim, SonicWall VPN client etc)
Upon boot up, after logging in, the screen sits on the desktop wallpaper for up to 8 minutes until the desktop finally loads, the only way around this is to hit esc after login, and the desktop loads instantly.
Ontop of that, after successfully connecting to vpn, or even if on a home LAN that has a permanant hardware vpn connection via sonicwall back to the home office, while attempting to browse a networked drive on the remote server, explorer completely freezes and cannot be alt + ctrl + del ended (the window doesn't come up) The only way to end it is to unplug the cable and let it auto-fail.
- Browsing a local lan works perfectly
- other laptops are able to browse perfectly fine via VPN, both from client, ssl, and from the remote lan with hardware sonicwall connection.
Some things I've narrowed down
- The issue causing the startup freeze/latency is XP's "workstation" service (lanmanworkstation), If i disable this service XP boots normally (i can only believe, that due to the nature of this service (windows networking) it is also responsible for causing the issue with network drives))
- If i unmap the network drives, the machine also boots normally (lanmanworkstation still running)
I have been searching for a solution to this for literally a week now, and to answer some questions in similar cases i've seen come up.
- No other wireless application is installed, using WZC
- This happens over both wireless and wired connections
- This happens from several different locations
- Did a repair/reinstall of windows
- Did a system restore (several infact)
- No spyware, no viruses
- AVG Antivirus
- Windows firewall disabled
