The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

MPLS vs. Point to Point T1 - Advantages and Disadvantages
Tags: mpls, point, vs, t1
Right now I have four sites - one main location and 3 remote offices.  Two of the remote offices are connected via point to point T1 lines and the third has no connectivity back to the main site.  I need to add connectivity for this third site now.

I pay $700/month each for the two point to point lines for a total of $1400.  I have gotten quotes for about $625 for a third point to point T1 so that will be $2025 total.  I got a quote for MPLS between all four sites and this only included 1.5Mb for each location and that was already $2400 ($600/each).  I would need more bandwidth than that at my main location.

My question is... Are the prices for the MPLS too high?  I thought price was supposed to be an advantage of MPLS.  I only have 4 local loops as opposed to six.  Also, what advantages does MPLS have over point to points T1s.  I need any information you can give me.  Thank you!

sorry I am not answering your direct question, but did you consider the LAN-2-LAN VPNs over cheaper and or faster links?

The MPLS price is about right.  I have a couple of sites at $550.  But it depends on the provider.  I'm apart of an int'l company with a Singapore Telcomm handling the MPLS network.  So my site is charged $1500 for the line.

The major benefit of MPLS really isn't price though (not like you're thinking); at least not that I've heard of.  Its a way to ensure better security (mainly because its separate of the Internet, not just encrypted like L2L VPN), allows for multiple protocols to traverse its network unlike FR or ATM, and the administration is much more simplified; just have to configure each PE/CE pair and your done for the site.

Where price comes in was the FR/ATM versus MPLS argument.  You don't need the N-1 dedicated lines for a full mesh network setup that you would in other WAN technologies.

Pricing looks ok. I have MPLS from AT&T nationwide and some sites are less, some are more. When it was time to make the p2p vs. mpls decision it came down to functionality and what we needed to accomplish. MPLS allowed us to host services at our DR site without putting multiple T1's or a full mesh frame at each site. Also for Voip, it meant voice traffic between sites didn't end up being routed thru the data center and we are able to host CM subscribers at locations other than the DR site. Also price is very competitive when compared to like size frame connections.

Compared to point to point configuration is more complex but less so than doing full mesh frame. One thing to look out for is depending on the method of mpls delivery you may experience more latency than on p2p but nothing that is a deal breaker.

You are correct in that you may need a larger line at your primary site but when we priced it with vendors it wasn't double or triple to go up. I think most were around a 50% increase for the first additional t1 then approx 20% for each additional.

Overall we've been pretty pleased with the choice.

Hope this helps

It almost sounds like I should be point p2p, not MPLS.  The traffic over the lines is mainly going to be VOIP and Citrix traffic.  The Callmanager servers are at the main site as are the Citrix servers.  Everything does basically go through the main site... Nothing really remote office to remote office.  Is MPLS easier to manage that p2p?  I guess the ISP knows if there is a problem right away.  Is there anything I am missing here?  It kind of seems like p2p is the way to go for me.

>> Is MPLS easier to manage that p2p?
if full mesh is required, or near full mesh and you have a lot of sites, then much easier

For you probably.  As you aren't seeing a lot of cost savings and the p2p does what you need it to do and there aren't a ton of sites to link together, MPLS maybe overkill at this point for you.
