The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

VPN (vista) ipconflict

Tags: Cisco, VPN, 5.0.03.0390
Okey guys, i hope i can explain this clear enough.

I have a Vista business OS. and running VPN on it. When trying to make connection to 1 of the profiles, it gives me the error: "IP-Address conflict".
Tho the network i'm trying to connect to, is NOT in the same adres range. ( my range is 172.16.x.x en theirs is 192.168.x.x)
Tho this error only comes on vista, and only when i am connected to my work domain.
weird thing is, logging in on XP doesn't give me this error, and logging in on vista machine from home (its a laptop i use on both work and home) doesn't give me any trouble.

anyone have any idea's???

Right from the support site of Cisco: Here is the process the client goes through:

1. Authenticates with the vpn appliance.
2. Receives parameters from the appliance which includes private IP address, etc.
3. Client then assigns the IP information to the Virtual Adapter.
4. Client then enables the virtual adapter.
5. Client checks to ensure the virtual adapter is enabled and then changes status to connected.

What is going on:
When the client assigns the IP information and enables the adapter, Vista is causes a false positive IP address conflict, for whatever reason and shuts down the virtual adapter. This will cause the client to hang at "securing connection".

What you might also have happen is that when the client assigns the IP address to the virtual adapter and enable's the adapter, the client checks to see if the adapter is really enabled, this is done by enumerating the adapters looking for the assigned IP. Vista now stores the IP information for the adapters is a hidden store and we do not have API control over this and can't ensure that there is no old IP address in there, sometimes Vista hangs onto the old IP even though we tell it to clear it after disconnect, when we enumerate the adapters vista returns the old IP not the new IP and the client things the adapter is not enabled, again causes the client to hang at securing connection.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do on your machine to resolve this. See my post above for some workarounds but ultimately there isn't something enduser can fix, it's something that we need fixed by MS, in the meantime we are adding more "hacks" to our code to work around the MS lack of API access to the network stack.

Have a look:

http://geekswithblogs.net/evjen/archive/2007/01/01/102429.aspx

search for conflict. I also found this:

I have gone through multiple problems with Vista Ultimate and Cisco VPN client. I have had Reason 442 errors, IP Conflicts, and the program hanging in the "securing connections" mode. I was running into dead-end solutions, until I stumbled upon this fix:

open your saved profile in an editor like notebook and inject the following line into the [main] section of the script

UseLegacyIKEPort=0

This change has taken me from spinning my wheels, to being able to actually get some work done for a change.

weird thing is, after i tried logging in at home it worked, like i said, but now i tried the same profile this morning, and i could log in @ work also.. does this mean that logging in @ home flushed the hidden Database for vpn?

i cant test Ur solution until i get the ip conflict error again. this kinda ticks me off. also, it seams like i received a new ip lease this morning from our DHCP. could this have fixed the error?
Not all the vista machine's @ work have the conflict problem, that's why I'm starting to think it really IS, the ip lease of our dhcp, tho its not the same range as the vpn profiles...

Could it be a bug in 5.0.03.0390? I'm using VPN dialer 5.0.02.0090, I never used 5.0.03.0390, on my vista laptop as well and log in on a PIX506, ASA5505 and PIX501. Without any problems I might say so. We also use 172.16.. as a VPN-DHCP pool

... Sometimes when I log in at the clients office I get a ip-conflict. But that is rare! And I dial in alot with my VPN CLient software.

Normally if I do it for a second time it usually works with a smile.

Hope this will shed some sun on your problem.

it might be a bug in the software, its only just a beta, but i had the problem with a few previous versions also, that's why i tried the latest beta version.

the problem seems to be gone after i logged in with vpn at home, but i do wanna test Ur script add on, but i cant without the error.

I'll keep u posted on the status, tho Ur comment on this part concerning the local data that vpn saves to Ur laptop, made me try to log in @ home, and seemed to have resolved it for now. Tho i am not sure,  if THAT was the solution, or simply getting a new IP the next day solved it, i still do want to reward u with the points, as soon as I'm sure it's solved.

UseLegacyIKEPort=0

did not work, I adjusted the profile that made the conflict this time, but after the adjusting, and restarting vpn, it just gave me the ipconflict again. i think the best solution is log in on vpn at home. that fixed it last time tho, ill test it again tonight.
