Thanks for the help so far.
I can ping domain.com, server.domain.com and just plain server. I guess that's good. But I still cannot see server or any of it's shared resources in network browser when I try to map a drive or register a server from management studio.
Some progress, though... The server does not show up under My Network Places -> Entire Network -> Microsoft Windows Network, so I cannot use the GUI to navigate to the connection I want. However, I can just type in the name of the server and it connects just fine. So, now from Management Server, I have a connection to the remote database. While I don't understand how I can connect to resources that do not show in the network browser, 1/2 of my problem is solved because I can indeed connect.
The other half of my problem is that while the VPN connection is active I cannot access Internet or VNC connections. They just don't respond. I do have the "use default gateway on remote network" checked. I don't need to access the internet over the VPN connection--I'd just as soon access it over my local network connection, but it does not work.

Browsing over a VPN can be very slow. You need to see if you can in fact reach that server by name or not. First try pinging the server by its host name using the FQDN (i.e., server.domain.com). If that succeeds, you are getting name resolution, which is good. Then try to map a drive to a resource on the server. If you can do that, you should be OK to run SQL Mgmt. Studio and connect to the server. It may (probably will be) slow, though, unless you have a fast broadband connection.
As far as web browsing, you need to make sure that your VPN connection is set to use the default gateway on the remote network, if you want to browse using the VPN connection. That setting is in the properties of the VPN connection: go to the Networking tab, click the IP Protocol, click the Properties button, then click the Advanced button.
