There are only a few software applications I use to access the client site (Remote Desktop, Putty, MS SQL Server). Is there a way to direct browsers and email applications to use a network connection other than the VPN connection?

I believe what you are looking for is not necessarily to split applications, but to tunnel traffic destined for your client sites only to your clients, and let the rest of your traffic flow normally? So you could connect with putty to their server, yet still browse the web and print normally?
That's called "Split Tunneling". It has to be enabled by the person configuring the VPN server, the device you use your VPN client to connect to. Usually a firewall or VPN concentrator of some sort.
Ask your VPN administrator to configure Split Tunneling for your VPN account.
