Question

vpn works with one wireless card but not another on same computer

Asked by: glentek

I have a Dell Latitude D520 laptop computer with an internal 1390 wireless mini-card.  With it I can create a VPN connection to a remote network, and then I can ping network addresses there.  I also have a Belkin FSD7050 USB wireless adapter.  When I create the VPN connection to the remote network using the Belkin adapter, I can't ping any of the network addressess there. Using either NIC, I can access the internet directly (non-VPN).  Using either NIC, it appears that VPN connections are created (Cisco VPN Client creates icons in the tooltray).  However, when using the Belkin adapter, the VPN connection does not allow me to ping the network addresses on the remote network.

I have provided routing table information (netstat -rn) for each wireless NIC after the VPN connectiton has been established.  Note that I have changed parts of the the remote network IP addresses to 'aaa.bbb' for security reasons.  The only things I notice that look suspicious are lines 14 and 15 of the active routes.  It looks like the order of these 2 entries is reversed.  I'm not sure whether that is significant.  I have highlighted those lines with '***' on the left of each line.  Also, there are differences in the metric columne.  Again, I am not sure whether that is significant.  Everything else looks the same.

Any ideas of why this is happening and what I can do to get the VPN connection using the Belkin USB adapter?

Yes, ping is one of the network tests I use.  How do I check to see if a local firewall is enabled on the belkin adapter?

I have been able to fix this problem.  I have McAfee Security Center installed.  When I go to "Internet & Network", then "Configure", then "Advanced", then "Trusted and Banned IPs", and "Remove" all the IP address ranges other than my home network, then I can create a VPN connection to my work site and have access to remote network addresses there.
