The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Is it normal for the LAN Adapter to register its IP address to an Internal DNS Server while connected to VPN?

Asked by Sighclops in Virtual Private Networking (VPN)

Tags: Cisco ASA5520, Cisco VPN Client 2K-XP-Vista 5.0.04.0300

i have several at Home users connecting into the LAN with the Cisco VPN Client. Once they connect, they are registering the Virtual VPN Adapter's IP Address on our internal DNS server which works fine and we can then connect to them by name. In addition to this, the client computer is also sending the IP information of the LAN Adapter to our DNS Server which then creates another entry with the external IP address it had before it connected to VPN. This causes issues resolving the computer by name now as it will sometimes resolve to the external IP address it had.

I can uncheck the option for the LAN Adapter to "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" and this will work for clients who only work from home but it will cause issue for laptop users who work at home as well as working from the office. When in the office their adapter will not register in DNS which will cause problems trying to resolve these computers by name.

I have talked to Cisco Support and they tell me it is not normal for the LAN adapter to send its IP Address accross the tunnel while the computer is connected to VPN with the cisco Virtual VPN Adapter.

Has anyone run into this and have a fix for me?

Thanks
