Question

Error 1720 When installing Cisco VPN client on windows

Asked by: GrimReeper

I'm trying to install the Cisco VPN client version 5.0.02.0090.but I have run into a problem that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

Whenever I try to install it I get this message: "Error 1720. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run." (You can see this error in the image attached.)
I have tried to install a different version of the VPN client but get the same error. I can also other software. I have tried all the methods detailed on this page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175/en-us

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem??

Thank you

Hi,

Try running CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/download delete the tmp files and run the reg cleaner also (do a backup of your registry first), Install any missing windows updates, and just to rule it out scan for spyware with Malwarebytes http://malwarebytes.org/  Then try installing it again and or redownloading it.

Cheers,
Perry

Could be that user account, I am assume this is on the domain try loggin into the domain using your another login to see if it is a user account issue.  If not can you see if you can load the Cisco client via not script package to see.  It almost seems like a permission issue on the registry.  Just my gut feeling.

Wooying, your probably right.

Are you installing the Cisco VPN client with an Administrator account?

Perry IDITC I deleted my temporary files, checked windows update and checked for spyware but still no luck. Yes I'm using I'm using a administrator account

wooying I'm not on a domain, it's a home computer. I am using a full administrator account and checked that both my user account and the system account have full access to all hives of the registry

johnb6767 please see the log attached as you requested. I tried installing Windows Script 5.7 but it said my service pack was newer so I didn't need it. I installed Windows Script 5.6 to see if that would remedy the problem but no luck.

johnb6767 I have had no previous versions of the Cisco VPN client on my system. I have had several failed attempts.

I did try using both the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and manually removed the remnants of my failed attempts per Cisco's instructions but it didn't help.

I will report back after retrying with a clean boot.

The fact your on a home computer could be an issue, perhaps part of the script require authenication or make sure that the FQDN is listed before it allow the install.  I know some of our scripts we do not allow home computer to install certain programs without it being part of the domain.  I am not 100% sure but I suspect that could be your issues.  Check with the authors of the script and see what they have to say.  Good Luck

Ok I have some news that may help you solve this for me and help me dish out the points sooner. I created a new Windows XP SP3 32bit virtual machine using microsoft virtual pc and the cisco vpn client installed perfectly without any errors. It should also be noted that this virtual pc did not have access either to my home network or to the internet.

I haven't tried the clean boot method suggested by johnb6767 yet.

Im also having this problem.

Windows XP Pro SP3

by: wooyingPosted on 2009-03-21 at 01:37:03ID: 23946399

GrimReeper, try uninstalling SP3, I heard some bad things about SP3.  Worth a shot.

by: GrimReeperPosted on 2009-03-21 at 05:26:35ID: 23946977

I don't think this problem is going to be solved sadly. I'm not going to uninstall SP3 to get this working, I'll just keep using it on a virtual box. It may only be a band aid fix but it works.

Guess there always options Good Luck.

Anyone been able to solve this yet? I am still having the problem.

Thanks,

WMI is corrupted by the sound of it.

Check out this link to fix the WMI as the Cisco client uses WMI to install the VPN Software.

Hope this helps.
