Question

How to remotely access files on fille server in small office securley?

Asked by: Adam_Twelve

Hi,  I need to set up a file server in a small office with 5 XP Pro computers in a workgroup network.  The users need to be able to access the file server from remote computers, no more than 3 at a time.  The files are mostly small PDFs and Word docs.  Multiple users need to be able to open the files and print/read them at the same time, they do not need to edit them at the same time.  Security is very important.

I have used a D-link DNS-323 to do the local file sharing in the past and it has worked great.  I am not very familiar with VPNs though. I have looked into some ways of doing this and a VPN seems like the best option.  The office has a dynamic IP, and I plan on using dyndns.  If I use a linksys WRV 210 and QuickVPN will the users be able to connect to the mapped network storage and be secure?  Is a SonicWall, or router running DD-WRT v24-VPN a better option?  Or should I look into another way of setting this up?

i never used with Quck VPN but by looking other web site, its looks alright

but only thing i would tell you, if you too much concern about security of your files, then use ssl connection.
I dont know if quick vpn support ssl transfer or not.

or you can try with openvpn, is easy to setup and its has ssl tunneling
just have a look bellow article, its might give you some good idea..

Linksys and the quickVPN will work well and so will Sonicwall.  However, I would go with the Sonicwall solution and a TZ180 25 node and the Global VPN Client.  It may a bit more money but a rock solic solid solution.

If you go with DD-WRT, the issue you will run into is NAT transversal is not supported which is required for VPN clients that are behind other routers.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAT_transversal

Dyndns is a good way to go  so that as your site's IP changes all your users have to remember is the dns name(which humans tend to remember easier).

If you want something free, you could try OpenVPN..

Its easy enough to setup multiple instances of the VPN server to accept 3 or so concurent users.

Why not use a CMS solution like plone (http://plone.org/) or I dare say MS Share Point, and forget about the VPN?  It sounds like a lot of hassle for only 5 nodes. Plus I can almost guarantee that your solution will increase the amount of hours spend on support for this site.

Hey guys sorry it took so long to reply here.  I set up quick VPN with the DNS323 and was unable to connect to the DNS323 NAS.  I talked to D-lik and the said they do not support a connection via VPN.  I then replaced the DNS323 with a Freenas server I built from a MSI wind, the computers can all access the Freenas server localy, but not over VPN.  Does anyone know how to configure Freenas or QuickVPN to allow access to the freenas server from remote clients?

Things that work and don't work:

While connected to the network via QuickVPN:

1.  I am able to access maped networked drives on remote windows computers and ping the windows computers
2.  Can't connect to a mapped network drive on the freenas server.
3.  Can't ping freenas server
4.  Can't FTP to freenas server

While at the site everything works great, the FTP and mapped drives.

I have tried disabling the freenas firewall and turning it on allowing all access.

Any suggestions?

Can you connect to the specific ports via telnet?  Here is a useful link from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832017 This is a service overview and network port requirements for the Windows Server systems.

If you can not connect then there has to be additional firewalls somewhere.

I am running an ESX server and remember that I had to install some UNIX/Linux client protocol from Microsoft on the server to access the file shares directly. I will get back to you on this.

Sounds trivial, but have you checked that the FreeNAS server knows of how to route traffic from VPN IPs? I suppose you are using an own IP network for VPN, and the VPN router is default gateway for any device but FreeNAS.

I ended up setting up a windows file server and was able to access the files over the VPN with no problems.
