Question

Can't Uninstall Cisco VPN Client 4.6.00.0049

Asked by: lskair

Hi Experts,
I am having a problem uninstalling Cisco VPN Client 4.6.00.0049. The application hung on uninstall from add/remove programs and system now keeps trying to uninstall after reboot. The application cannot uninstall and if I try to reinstall it says a previous version has been installed and a reboot is required. It's just a cycle of reboots since the system is continually trying to uninstall. I have tried some of the other suggestions from EE posts and also Cisco website, but no luck. Some errors received include "Remove Plugin Failed" followed by Error 1722 and then a request to reboot to complete the uninstall. Also receives error 28005 if you try to install or open VPN client after uninstall fails. Windows Installer clean up does not show Cisco VPN Client in the list. Any help would be appreciated, so I can cleanly remove this version and install 5.4. Thanks.

try booting into safe mode and uninstalling

if that doesn't work trying installing a higher version.  It may uninstall the previous version, and install itself.  Then you should be able to uninstall it...   If that doesn't work you could delete the cisco keys from the registry.

Cisco VPN Client doesn't show up in Add/Remove programs or using Microsoft Installer. Is there any way to manually delete. I already checked out an article on the Cisco website, but I don't use installshield version, so the instructions don't apply. I have also tried installing version 5.4 over the previous 4.6 but it says a previous version is installed and must first be removed, and then gives error 28005 and requests a reboot.

I checked my system at home, and reviewed the registry keys.  I searched for 'cisco' , and it found a bunch of keys.  You can export the keys with cisco, and then delete the keys (if you don't have anything else from cisco installed), if there is a problem you just double click on the .reg keys you exported and you are back to where you started, no harm, no foul

I have searched and deleted all keys containing "cisco" and the system does not auto uninstall after reboot anymore, however, it still will not install the newest version. It begins the uninstall with the same errors when trying to install.

Registry keys are removed, but it still begins uninstall of old version (which no longer exists) and so it finds an error and can't continue. Same error as originally. "Remove Plugin Failed" followed by Error 1722. Registry keys get rewritten and must be removed again to avoid auto reload of uninstall after reboot. I'll up the points to 500 for anyone who can point me in the direction of solving this. It's been nonstop reboots all day and I don't know why this won't just cooperate and install, since the old version appears to be removed.

hmmmm....   ya know...   can you check in ei, tools->internet options->Temporary Internet files->settings->View objects...   and tell me if you see any object there tagged with cisco?  (this is for ie 6)  for ie 7, it's not temporary ie files

Was able to resolve it by downloading WinASO registry cleaner. All necessary keys were repaired/removed. The problem was that there were way more keys than I was finding, since it's not just "cisco" search term for VPN client registry keys. There were several other keys which didn't even include "cisco" or "vpn" so the cleaner was able to find these keys and fix them so I could then install the updated version. Soon as it finished the repairs, I rebooted, and uninstall completed without errors. I then installed and have tested VPN connection successfully. Thanks for the help in resolving. I'll award points to the b1ackfox for pointing me in the right direction with the registry keys.
