Question

VPN works, but cannot browse other servers

I have a windows Vista machine with a Sprint wireless card that has VPN set up to our domain at the office.  The VPN can connect fine and I can Ping or RDP into any  PC on my network, but I cannot browse the shares on any of those machines.  Thanks.

What errors do you get when you try to browse.  Are we talking an authentication issue?

Is your NIC configured to use the DNS on the server under TCP/IP properties or just the usual local DNS server of the router?

If you cannot resolve the names of the internal machines, then you won't be able to access the shares.

Can you ping IP Addresses across the VPN?
Can you ping computer names across the VPN?

Have you setup the IP Address of the internal DNS server under the DNS networking properties of the VPN connection?

How are you rdp'ing to other machines, via ip or netbios name?  If you are connecting via ip address and not by the netbios name then it could be a WINS issue.  Do you have a WINS server? Try connecting via netbios name and see if that works if you haven't tried yet.

We are able to browse through the shares on the other servers now, but it is extremely slow.  Is there anything I could check that might be slowing the connection down?

Adding the server IP and address to the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.sam file usually speeds up access about 5-fold.

That did seem it speed it up, but it is still to slow to actually use it.  Is there anything else that could be effecting it?
