Question

Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client error

Asked by: mstrick96

My Cisco Anyconnect VPN client V 2.1.0148 can no longer connect to our VPN site.  It authenticates, and checks for updates and then when it tries to connect, it gives the error message "The VPN Client driver has encountered an error."  No indication of what kind of error.  This is on a laptop running XP.  I get the same symptoms from every WiFi portal I have tried.   I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the client with no luck.  Is there a Windows driver that the VPN client uses that could be at fault?  I think it is likely something in my laptop outside the VPN client that is the problem.  It worked fine up until about a month ago.  Our IT department is stumped.

I get this alot too.

Try these steps 1st:
   1.      Open a command prompt as an Administrator on the PC (elevated prompt on Vista).
   2.      Run net stop CryptSvc.
   3.      Run esentutl /p %systemroot%\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb.
   4.      When prompted, choose OK to attempt the repair.
   5.      Exit the command prompt.
   6.      Reboot.

If that fails, try:
   1.      Open a command prompt as an Administrator on the PC (elevated prompt on Vista).
   2.      Run net stop CryptSvc.
   3.      Rename the %WINDIR%\system32\catroot2 to catroot2_old directory.
   4.      Exit the command prompt.
   5.      Reboot.

Mike,
No help.  I was hopeful, but neither fix changed anything.  After the second one, the error message changed to Unable to establish VPN.  The next time I tried to connect I was back to the original message.

ANy other possibilities?

I've contacted tac on this before too.   There aren't many options.    Those are the only suggestions cisco offers.    I can suggest removing the anyconnect, then clean out the registry of all cisco entries, then reboot and reinstall.   That was mentioned to have worked but I never had success.  If you have kaspersky av,  remove the NDIS driver from the nic.   Its not needed and is suggested in the kaspersky forum for this issue too.   I've had to reinstall xp on several machines to get around this too.   Hope one of those works for you.  Post your updates when you try

Mike,
I tried these instructions again to repiar the database and this time it worked!  Not sure if I did something wrong before, or if it just took a couple of tried to get the database cleaned up properly.

In any case, it is now working!  Thanks!

I have had the same exact error start up after working JUST FINE for several months.  One day fine, next day... Client Driver Error.  never has worked since, going on two months now.  Have contacted my employer's help desk (USELESS, just told me I probably downloaded software that conflicts, but couldnt offer suggestions as to what it might be, and I hadn't downloaded anything anyway).  Uninstalled per their instructions but still same error after reinstall.  I did not go into registry - how would I be certain to find everything in registry to delete?  Thanks :)  I am working on XP too.

I'd also like to comment, I tried to install the AnyConnect version 2.4.1012 and will not work with XP.  Trying to install an older version only forces an upgrade to the latest version when connecting.  Went through several troubleshooting steps including the ones above to no avail.

If you are trying to use AnyConnect on a 32-bit XP machine, don't bother, it won't work.

I receive a "I get a "The VPN Client is unable to establish a connection." error, and there is no way around it.  It works with the older IPSec VPN client, but it will not work with AnyConnect.  However, AnyConnect will work on Windows 7 and Vista, it just won't work on XP no matter what and I don't think Cisco plans to fix this.

As cited here, 2.4.0202 was the last version to work with XP, but if you try to use it to connect, it forced you to upgrade to 2.4.1012.

I had the same issue, REMOVING Mcafee Total Protection fixed :)  I have also heard Apple iTunes doesn't get along well with Cisco AnyConnect

Seems the issue varies depending on other software involved.  I read that Kaspersky had issues as well.  In my case, I shut off my anti-virus (NOD32) and turned off windows firewall, still did not help.  The only other software I have installed are Adobe CS3 and Office 2007.

Also, I have a WIndows 7 x64 desktop on the same network and subnet as my laptop and and Windows 7 works perfectly with the AnyConnect client.  Windows XP does not.

Had the same issue (XP SP3), tried the suggestion from MikeKane and had already been to website/link and tried the suggestion associated with the error, but still received the error.

These are the steps that I took to resolve the error:

(I also mention that I had already uninstalled Adobe ActiveX before making changes to IE8)

Open IE8 - Tools - Internet Options
On the Security tab click 'Reset all zones to default level'
On the Privacy tab click 'Default'
On the Advanced Tab click 'Reset'
Closed/Re-open IE8 and did not get the error and was able to download/install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.

I wish I had tried these one at a time so I could tell you which step resolved the issue, but after fighting with this for a couple of hours, it was out of desperation that I decided to reset all IE8 settings, especially since.....
I had also Uninstalled McAfee Security suite but still had the error.
After making the changes in IE8 and not getting the error anymore I  reinstalled the McAfee Security Suite and was still able to connect w/o any errors, so I don't think McAfee had anything to do with the error.

Hope this helps.
