Firefox isn't using my OpenVPN address

Hey there !

I only recently installed OpenVPN on my Windows 7 Professional (64 bit). I used the Alonweb VPN to connect and obtain another IP address. Everything worked fine, except the fact that my internet browsers fail to use that IP. Same happens with Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer etc...

Any ideas ?

What IP are your browser using? Do you have multiple default gateways (this does not work)? How are Alonweb VPN and OpenVPN related to each other?

Hey there Qlemo !

The browsers are using my default externam IP : 92.81.116.2XX

And the assigned VPN address i got was 172.32.1.XX .

AlonwebVPN only provides the actual config file that OpenVPN is using. (So OpenVPN knows where to connect).

I didn't understand the gateway question, I'm not an expert ^^

If you are no expert, why are you on Experts-Exchange? :-)

I suppose you want the Internet Conection to be going over OpenVPN - right?
You do not care about the IP address used, then.

in this case, you need to make sure you use the remote gateway as your default gateway.

try finding the option of "use remote gateway as the default gateway" from your OPEN VPN client. check it if applicable.

if there is no such an option available, you may use ROUTE ADD command to manually delete the local remote gateway or give it a high metric to make it spare.

for example, use ROUTE ADD to check the local gateway, it would look like this:

Network Destination   Netmask     Gateway         Interface               Metric
0.0.0.0                        0.0.0.0        192.168.1.1    192.168.1.123      25

to make the local default gateway in a low priority if your VPN's metric number is less than 100.

ROUTE ADD 0.0.0.0 MASK 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 METRIC 100

be aware, you can't use the -P option to permanently delete (ROUTE DELETE) your local gateway as this will disconnect you from the internet.

OpenVPN does not allow for "using remote gateway" setting.

Better than the above manual route settings is to use a "split route" in your OpenVPN config file. Insert following commands into the .ovpn:

route 0.0.0.0 128.0.0.0
route 128.0.0.0 128.0.0.0
This will overrule your local default gateway setting, because both routes are more specific (by one bit) than the default route. Gateway address will be filled in by OpenVPN; the route is active on connection only, and removed at disconnect.

If you want only specific sites to be addressed via OpenVPN, you can always route to that specific address or name, e.g. by using
in OpenVPN config file.

With those changes, it should run smooth and easy.

Umm, i had some results (not the expected ones) with your solution Qlemo.

I added

route 0.0.0.0 128.0.0.0
route 128.0.0.0 128.0.0.0



My ip gets changed to 85.17.136.142 even though OpenVPN sais my assigned ip is 172.32.0.178 .

And i tried routing separate addresses but had no success. Any other ideas ? I think we are on the right track :)
