Question

VPN Connection plus NAP error

Asked by: LostInWindows

I am trying to connect Vista to SBS 2008. After I make the connection I am seeing from the server RRAS window "not NAP compatible". The Network Policies are shown in the picture below. My VPN connects, I can ping anywhere on the network but I cannot browse the network or more importantly, I cannot map a network drive.
The router is a Cisco RVS4000. I am not using the Cisco VPN client and I am connecting to the network from a location that uses a different subnet.

What am I missing?

Is the Cisco allowing both 1723 and the GRE protocols through for your VPN connection?

Philip

Yes, both are allowed. Port 1723 as well as allowing PPTP, IPSEC and L2TP which covers GRE.

Does the VPN wizard run successfully?

Philip

by: LostInWindowsPosted on 2009-10-06 at 21:04:08ID: 25512134

From the SBS side, The RRAS/VPN wizard ran (through the SBS Console) properly with no errors or warnings. I only ran it once, I could run it again if that could help.

Before doing that, take note of your DHCP reservations then run the Fix My Network wizard (it resets DHCP).

Then rerun the VPN wizard.

Can you ping the server via IP, name, and FQDN?

When connecting to the share use:
 \\sbs.mysbsdomain.local\share

Using the fully qualified path will eliminate any conficts.

Also, make sure the remote client and the local network are _not_ on the same subnet!

Your SBS network should be 192.168.10.0/24+

Consumer routers use anywhere from 192.168.0.0/24 through 192.168.5.0/24 or sometimes higher.

The SBS network is on 192.168.2.x with the server being at 2.5. I have triple checked the subnet range and it is ok.
I can ping the server by FQDN or by address.
I personally don't have a vista laptop, so I am at the mercy of my customer. They want this fixed quickly, however, right now they are extremely busy in the office. I will get the laptop this evening and I will not need to return it until Tuesday morning so I am hoping to do more testing and hopefully fix it properly this weekend.

On Vista you will need to map via FQDN\Path.

Check the server logs for any hiccups in the authentication process too.

do you mean company.local\share or do you mean sbs.company.local\share

by: MPECSIncPosted on 2009-10-09 at 17:53:35ID: 25540090

Should be:
  \\SBSName.SBSDomain.Local\ShareName

Or go root and get a list of the available folders.

Still having problems. i haven't forgotton

by: LostInWindowsPosted on 2009-10-29 at 05:18:11ID: 25692759

I have spents hours and days with Microsoft on this issue. The main problem is that I had disabled IPv6 and this is needed for remote connection to SBS2008. Althought we are not using IPv6 there are parameteres that are needed. With their help, I followed information in this link http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2008/10/24/issues-after-disabling-ipv6-on-your-nic-on-sbs-2008.aspx as well as undoing all the changes that I had done to disable IP v6.
The real kicker is that the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteAccess\RouterManagers\Ipv6 was corrupted and need to be deleted.
