Windows 2008 VPN not working after RRAS was disabled & re-configured enabled again

Hello

I would be very grateful if someone could help me with the following problem that I have experienced before and am experiencing now but do not know how to fix:

I had a Windows PPTP VPN (RRAS) configured on Windows Server 2008, using custom configuration as I only had 1 NIC. It worked flawlessly until one day one of our technicians disabled and deleted the RRAS. I tried to re-configure the vpn from scratch but the RRAS service would not start - and the following error with event 20103 was in event viewer system logs:

Unable to load C:\Windows\System32\iprtrmgr.dll.

I was able to start the RRAS service by deleting IPv6 from:
HK Local_Machine>System>Current control set>Services>Remote access>router managers>ipv6

However when I try to vpn in from outside it does not work at all.

The RRAS ports is missing the WAN mini port PPTP, and in device manager I can see WAN mini PPTP.

I have even tried the rarerepair utility but that does not work either.

Can someone please advise how I can get the vpn working again?

I would try to uninstall the RRAS ( windows component ) and reinstall it, then reconfigure.

Also make sure that you have a full backup of the OS and data beforehand as in any change on a production server.

Already tried uninstall/reinstall RRAS but it does not work.

There must be a way to remove all including settings/adapters etc which will unbind from the tcp ip kernel. Or a way to get the wan miniport pptp back?

For Vista, the sequence for complete TCP reinstallation is

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset
That might work here, too.It should at least remove all TCP dependant pseudo-interfaces.

I could test this solution as we do not have the server anymore. But a friend had the same issue and we tried the following:

I was able to start the RRAS service by deleting IPv6 from:

HK Local_Machine>System>Current control set>Services>Remote access>router managers>ipv6

DO NOT FOLLOW THE RAREREPAIR UTILITY AS THIS WILL CAUSE MORE DAMAGE, JUST DELETE REGISTRY KEY ABOVE AND START RRAS IT WILL WORK WITH PPTP PORTS.

Sorry forgot to mention in my situation I did try rarerepair and then deleted registry key, although it started rras the pptp ports were missing. I could not try out Qlemo solution as I do not have my server anymore. I hope this helps people.

Usually, you do not accept a solution you could not test (or prove otherwise). And many Experts don't like a C grade. The correct process would have been to post what you did, and accept that answer only. However, let's leave it at that.
