It can be very helpful to compare the ping times for both the wan and lan interfaces as suggested above. You should probably manually set the packet size to simulate real traffic. If you're seeing substantially different ping times on the wan and lan side then you can try traceroutes using d3tr to get an idea what you're looking at. Have you confirmed to make sure that your connection isn't saturated at these times?
