Slow transfer over VPN

We have two offices using Cisco Pix Firewalls for a permanent VPN connection between the two. I noticed that copying a file from one office to the other appears to be very slow. We have a standard DSL connection at both locations. I assumed that the transfer speed would be around 256 kbs which is our max upload speed.

Using Windows 7 durring a transfer I was able to click on a more details button and it showed that the transfrer speed was running at about 25 kbps.

Is this normal? What can I do to increase the speed?

Hello

Yes that is the normal download or upload for a connection running at 256KB/s

If you want to go faster you can try to get the plan changed to a faster upload / download speed.

The DSL upload is 256 kbps (kilobits per second).  Windows transfer speeds are listed in KBps (kilobytes per second).

25 KBps = 200 kbps (1 KB = 8kbps)

VPN connections have a bit of overhead (due to encryption and fragmentation from the packet headers changing expanding the packet beyond the MTU).

So that is normal.
