Question

How to logon to domain joined Windows 7 computer for first time using Cisco VPN

Asked by: sulzener

I've just reloaded my computer fresh with Windows 7 Enterprise.  I am using Cisco client version 5.0.06.0110 to connect remotely to office.  I'd like to logon using cached credentials, but cannot for the first time.  I've sucessfully added computer to the domain, but cannot get my credentials cashed in.  Is there a way to do this using Windows 7 and my Cisco VPN client?

I think it seems that the caching itself doen't work properly.

Cached logon information is controlled by the following key:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon\

   ValueName: CachedLogonsCount
   Data Type: REG_SZ
   Values: 0 - 50

You could try this and post the results.

I do not understand this.  I checked this key and its valiue in 10.  I need to be able to login to my company domain using VPN.  It's a brand new system and I cannot seem to find a way to get it to authenticate.  Any clues on how to do that?

I'm not familliar with the VPN client you are using but you need to turn on the feature where it allows you to establish the VPN tunnel BEFORE you login.  When you are at the CTRL-ALT-DEL screen have a look around to see if there are any options to establish your VPN connection at that point.  If not then look to the VPN client software to see if there is an option in there.

You cant log on to the computer as you dont have a cached profile.
If you can log on to the PC locally i.e. with the administrator account you can use the runas command to cache a profile.
First start your vpn, then from the command line type
runas /user:mydomain\username "explorer /separate"
you will be prompted to enter your password
It will take a while over the vpn to load your profile...
You will now be able to see your profile in c:docs and setts/username and should be able to log in.

You said that you use Cisco VPN client. In this client, there should be a simple "Enable start before logon" option. Turn this on.

With windows 7 and the Cisco VPN client, the "Enable start before logon" option does not work (either does VPN over WWAN .. most frustrating)

Thanks to all responses.  Here is an update:

1) When trying deepdraw suggestion of runas command, I get an error:
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run explorer/separtate
2: The system cannot find the file specified

2) As far as the "Enable start to before logon", the option is not available with the CISCO VPN client for Windows 7.

Are their any other suggestions.  I appreciate the feedback.  Shawn

For error listed in previous post, I meant to say:
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run explorer/separate
2: The system cannot find the file specified
