Question

How to secure my websites???

Asked by: el123

Hi Gurus,

I recently had some bad or can call it first hand experience of being hacked ... :-(

Yes, at least 2 (that I'm aware of) of my websites got hacked, one was sql injection and other was some malware.

Now the question is ... how to secure them, I know it's a pretty vague question, but I think, can start some where & right?

Please correct me, if not on the right track.

Please suggest, advice, share your thoughts & experiences how to secure a website, what should be the steps or methods or is there any thing out there ... free or even on some cost, in order to avoid this ... I know there must be.

But would love to hear from You Gurus ... thanks in advance.
Best regards.
EL

Honestly,

look into hardeing SQL first

http://www.owasp.org/index.php/SQL_Injection_Prevention_Cheat_Sheet

or just search "SQL Hardening Techniques"

Next, harden your Web Server, from common mistakes like writable directories, execution permissions, borwasable directories

Research "Apache Hardening" or "IIS Hardening"

The question is not as vagued as you mentioned, but requires extra work, all for then are free.

You will not find any "all inclusive" solution to your answer though, because it does not exist

To really help you in your current situation, there is needed more details about the web application, that got hacked. And for me strange seems that you are saying "one was sql injection and other was some malware" - as sql injection would be a way, how to hack your application, while  malware hosting could be the result of being hacked...

And what i found there, that you aren't sure how your application got to doing stuff it shouldn't do, so it's not wise to eliminate every other possibility and concentrate on sql injections only, but yes, for me too that site seems vulnerable to sql injections and from what you have said it seems most likely, that it's the way, how you did got hacked, read jfer0x01 recommended link to get the idea, what's needed to fix this.
What I suggest in addition to defending against sql injections -
1) think for some solution against brute-forcing your login form;
2) just to be sure, check pc you are accessing the site administration against viruses/spyware;
3) don't access site administration via wireless networks, about what security you can't be sure;
4) don't use the same password for everything, change your passwords from time to time.

from my small experience in this field
1- hacking the server
if you have a space in the website, administrating/securing the server should be done by the provider unless you have access.
if you have access this will be long story, but if they are responsible for security it, my advice is to choose good provider with good reputation.

2- hacking the website
this way you were hacked.
if you are writing your codes, you have to read more about secured coding (programing)
if you are using allready scripts, you have to keep following the designer website to check for any update, if you know someone in security field, he can help you to ensure that your webpages are not vuln.

Hi,

I believe you may have double posted your issue regarding your Hacked Site

only advice I can offer,
1. make regular backups of data
2. try not to use FTP to make changes to site, since password is sent plaintext
3. Lockdown all folder permissions after site changes
4. Check Logs Files for Security Violation Attempts
5. make all passwords over 8 characters
