Remote Access - VMWARE and/or GotoMyPC

I am currently investigating various Remote Desktop/Virtual Desktop solutions for our corporate environment, and am unsure which path to take.  We are looking at implementing solutions for two scenarios:

1) Remote Access to machines for 200 fulltime staff. This will be for DR purposes and/or allowing our staff members to work outside of the office. All users have Windows 2000 desktops. For a quick solution,  I was looking at GotomyPC (which seems to work fine), or longer term, I was probably thinking about implementing a VMWARE VDI solution?

2)Remote Access to corporate network for staff who are based OFF-SITE at other locations i.e. behind other 3rd party companies networks. These staff members do not have dedicated machines at the primary corporate network site.

Here I was thinking of implementing a pool of PCs in our VMWARE environment and sharing them out by using GotomyPC. Our off-site staff members can then have full remote access to the corporate network, without our IT Dept having to manage a VPN infrastructure etc. Again, this would be a quick fix easy solution. The alternative again would be to possibly use a VMWARE VDI solution.

Any help/feedack here would be appreciated.

Using vmware to host win2k PC's for remote access should be no problem, except that you'll have to provide high end hardware, and a lot of RAM. Although win2k should run reasonably with 256MB RAM, if any serious work is done on those VM's I guess you'll have to think of 512MB for every VM.

I don't know GoToMyPC, but I use Logmein and that works well on VM's, and there you also have a free version.

Logmein is an interesting solution, though I think that your IT department may end up having to spend more time maintaining VMs than if you set up a VPN infrastructure in the first place.

It almost sounds to me like you'd like to maintain a Citrix application environment but on the cheap.  You probably only want to reserve computing resources when people actually try to establish a session, and in that case you probably want to go the route of Windows Terminal Services.

I'd like to suggest Radmin 3.0 Remote Control. Its cheaper then GotomyPC and way faster. Plus it has some additional features like remote command line, GUI remote file transfer, proxy connections, audio and text chat and others.... check it out http://www.radmin.ca

We use it at my office with 300 desktops and all servers... works great. There are some issues with 64Bit systems, but 32Bit systems it works great. We chose it because it has a small foot print, easy to install across network clients and we needed something that  used  encryption for all traffic and NTLMv2 authentication.

I think they have 30 day trial... take a look.

Why not use SBS 2003 Remote Web Workplace, that way they can connect to in house desktops and use TS for outside desktops, just the savings of the monthly fees should pay off in the long run and it would be clean and easy.

You can use Kaseya. http://www.kaseya.com/index.php

It allows remote control and NAT and firewall friendly, simply work son port 80.
i use it at our organisation, and with just inet access, you can basicalkly login onto any server fom anywhere.
