VMWARE ESX Server - APC Powerchute network shutdown

Tags: apc, esx, vmware, shutdown, powerchute
Hi,

I need to know specifically how to install APC Powerchute network shutdown on 2 VMWARE ESX server hosts.
On those 2 hosts, I have 13 virtual servers running. Do I need to install APC Powerchute network shutdown on all of them and also on my 2 hosts. I'm not a linux geek so that is the reason I need a step by step guide on how to perform this task.

Thank you,

Hi,
First download the file from APC:
http://www.apcc.com/tools/download/software_comp.cfm?sw_sku=SFPCNS221&id=127&family=&part_num=&swfam=127&tsk=
Second:
Open the ports in the Firewall:
esxcg-firewall -o 80 , tpc, out, "APC PowerChute Port 80"
esxcg-firewall -o 3052 , tpc, in, "APC PowerChute Port 3052"
esxcg-firewall -o 3052 , udp, out, "APC PowerChute Port 3052"
esxcg-firewall -o 3052 , udp, in "APC PowerChute Port 3052"
Third:
Installation:
rpm -ihv /tmp/pcns-2.2.1-100.i386.rpm
Configuration:
cd /usr/local/bin/PowerChute/PCNSConfig.sh
put username and password and set up.

HI MCSCHIFFAHRT,

Can you give me more explanation on how to download the file on the esx server itself. I'm not really good in linux and I don't know how to put the file on the ESX server to perform the installation.

Thank you for you support !

Hi,
Download this program, it will help you to connect to the ESX-Server, but take carrefully.
http://dl.bitvise.com/Tunnelier-Inst.exe
Then create a folder under /tmp with the name of the program or create over console with "mkdir apc".
After that install the program as I wroted before
rpm -ihv /tmp/apc/pcns-2.2.1-100.i386.rpm

Hi again mcschiffahrt ,

First of all, thx for the information you posted here. It's been very helpfull and I have now installed PCNS on my 2 Vmwares Hosts. You're a genius !!!

I have a couple other questions though. Right now, my host will shutdown if there's an outage. How can I shutdown my VM before this happens?

Also, do you know a website that shows how to properly configure PCNS. There is a lot of option in there and I want to make sure everything will be ok in case of a shutdown. Right now, everything is set to default.

Thank you

Hi,
So regarding the VMs you should use a script for that, or your can also configure the VMs to be shutdown when the ESX Server goes down. Better look at www.vmware.com
There are a lot of information from www.apc.com for PCNS, pls take a look.
And be happy don't worry ;P
