vmware esx import existing vmachines

Hi, got a bit stuck with ESX 3.5   was rusty with 2 ...

have an esx server built and i can create new virtual machines which run fine  but i am having difficulty getting anything existing to run on it.

i have used datatstore broswer to upload the files  then right clicked add to inventory but every one says invlaid.

more likley me doing something wrong...?
