I am looking for a Host operating system to run VMware server on. I've decided I want to stick with a windows product. (I am not very familiar with Linux products and don't want to host things on a platform unfamiliar to myself and others in the organization.) Here is the Server specs I will be installing the host system on:
HP ML370
2 x 2.66GHZ Dual Core Processors
8GB of memory
2x146gb 10k SAS drives (Storage For Operating System Files)
Storage for documents and Job related files will be 2 x HP AIO600 ISCSI Servers Mirroring Each other
I plan to run the following virtual machines:
- 1x Windows SBS 2003 with Exchange2003 installed (50 users)
- 1xWindows XP
- 1x Windows 2000 with Terminal Services
- Maybe one or 2 more machines
I am wanting to use VMware Server so that I can save some money and not buy the ESX version.
My Choices for Host OS's are: (Reasons being, I need an OS that will address more then 3gb of memory)
- Windows Server 2003 R2 64bit ($700)
- Windows XP X64 Edition ($140)
Is VMware Server 1.0.4 supported on a Windows XP 64bit host?
My desire would be to go with the cheapest option and use Windows XP X64 but I do not know what downsides this presents if any.
What are your recommendations for my situation?
Thanks!!!
