Zones: VMWare, Windows 2003 Server

i have a old file and prit server, we created a new one now and i want to move the file server to new one..any one know what should i do.... i moved the print server to the new one.... but confused in file server.....

(Those are domain member server...)
We will backup all files (FULL BACKUP) from old file server, and then restore all to new file server (not copy), because the important is that it will remain ALL AD PERMISSION after restore in new file server.

A third approach is to use Robocopy (with the necessary switches) and to create the shares manually. The use of Robocopy (free tool from the MS Resource Kit) is exemplary as you can ran it the first time during production time in order to create a first "mirror" of the data.
Then you can even schedule it to run at, let's say every 15 minutes, in order to reallign the data (copying only newer or changed data). At the time you decide to migrate, you can stop sharing, run it another time for a final allignment, create the shares at the new server and dismiss the old fileshare.
I use it for file server migration (member servers or clusters) and even for cold standby disaster recovery servers.
Read the exhaustive help .doc file; for ordinary migrations I use the following syntax in my scripts (running on the source server):

robocopy.exe "source_path" "\\destination_path" /E /DATSOU /R:0

We also use robocopy a lot. First time copy and sync, later on when the move is actually done a last sync is done. Just like r_panos

Hi

Like others said use robocopy to copy the files. But be aware that robocopy do not copy shares, and permissions

For that use Permcopy like says in the site.

Where you have a small script how to copy the files, and with this script you can run every day just to update the files that are changed, or are new. Be aware of the options mov/move and /PURGE. This options can result of data losses
