VMWare Workstation 6, install guest, can't see CD rom

Asked by gateguard in VMware

Running Workstation 6.0.4 on Server2008.

Created a new VM, using typical settings.

Starting the VM with a Windows Server 2003 boot CD in the CD rom, but the VM startup goes right to network boot.  It doesn't start the CD.  It doesn't run the Windows 2003 install.

Tried these configurations:

1. auto-detect, ide 1:0  (the default)
2. e:, ide 1:0 (e: is the actual drive letter on the host machine and is accessible as a pull-down in the vm options)
3. auto-detect, ide 0:0
4. e:, ide 0:0

I even tried rebuilding the VM from scratch.

The e: drive definitely has a cd in it and the host machine can read that cd.

I also tried clicking "use exclusively" and "legacy" check boxes.

Nothing helped.

I'm stuck with a VM I can't load any software into.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
