Installing ESX server and configuring partitions

If you install ESX server  software on a server machine  before you connect it to the SAN or ISCSI or NAS, and when you get to the partitionning step, what would you do?
Or server machine must be connected to the SAN or ISCSI or NAS before the ESX server software gets installed?
The reason I am asking this because I am not sure where ext3,vmfs3,swap, vmcore files have to be installed.
