Question

Templates show as "disconnected" after adding Host

Asked by: perrytdi

I recently added a 2nd server to my VMWare host pool.  I took this opportunity to apply UPDATE1 to the new host prior to moving any VM to it (just FYI, may not be important at all).  My problem is that now all my templates show as "disconnected" with only the option to "add permissions" enabled.  I am logged on as an Administrator at the Host and Clusters level.
How do I connect the template?  Connect doesn't show up as a right click option.  Is it necessary to bring the other host server to UPDATE1 before this option will show up?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

Mark the template with your mouse and click the delete button on your keyboard. This will remove the template from the inventory.

Now use the browse datastore feature and rigthclick your vmtx file from your template and choose register template / machine. Follow the wizard...

When I try to delete the template I get a dialog box telling me I don't have the privledge to delete the selected item.  I have right clicked on it and given myself admin rights but it didn't help.
It looks like I can add the template by using a different name but I would prefer not to leave disconnected templates in my inventory.
Any ideas?

Have you tried using the VI client to connect directly to the ESX host server?  I have had times where systems showed up in the host but not in Virtual Center.  If it shows up in the host:  convert it to a VM, power it on, connect via Virtual Center, power it off, and finally re-convert it to a template.

Next thing you could try is to logon to your service console and restart the mgmt-vmware service by using this command:

service mgmt-vmware restart

It doesnt effect running virtual machines as its only the management service thats being restarted.
