Question

vmware guest causes system crash

Asked by: seth2740

I have a problem with vmware server on this system and I'm trying to see if this is a CPU or OS issue.
The system is a dell pe 6850 with 32gb ram, xeon cpu, running Red Hat EL 4 AS x64 (more details below).

I need to run 3 windows 2003 (x86) vm's on here and not getting very far.  I initially was doing a setup of the first windows system and the machine rebooted.  I looked at messages and found nothing unusual.  I ran setup again and it completed.  While that was running I was almost complete with the second windows system and the first one stopped responding.  within 10 minutes the vmware process was hung (I do have core dump), and both that and bash turned to zombies.  I had no choice but to power cycle the box.  System is running fine now but would like to know if there is a possible cpu issue here that is causing this.  I did run the check utility and told me I can't run a x64 guest, which is fine since these windows boxes are 32 bit.  I am allocating (or at least plan to once it works) 2 processors and 2gb ram for each windows guest.  Not sure if this makes any difference, but in the configuration I am specifying processorx.use = false for these.  One will have false for 0,1,2,3,4,5 to use 6 and 7.  Another will have false for 0,1,2,3,6,7 for the second, etc so as to allocate specific cores for these virtual machines.  I have also tried removing vmware and installing again with the same results.
