Question

Can't download VMware-viclient.exe from ESXi server

Asked by: brian_appliedcpu

I can't seem to download the VMware-viclient.exe from the esxi server we just setup.
The main web page to the esxi opens fine but when you click on the link to download the software, nothing happens.
I double checked the install and all seems fine.
Can i just download the client from the web?

Hi

Have you downloaded the update 2 patch?  The one for the 12th August date fix?  If so, you can unzip that file until you get to the following path:

:\ESXe350-200807812-O-BG\ESXe350-200807812-O-BG\ESXe350-200807403-C-UG\ESXe350-200807403-C-UG\

You fill find the executable for the vi client in there

Link to the patch is on this page:

To answer your original question.. You should be able to download the client directly from your ESX servers web page. The client is not available for direct download on vmware.com. What internet browser did you use? Did you try a different browser?

I actually found this prior to reading your posting but you were absolutly correct.  I have the patch but am new to this so I am unsure how to actually apply the patch to the esxi.  I can post another question if you like.

You can install the patch using the VMware Infrastructure Update client, which should have been installed along with the VMware Infrastructure client.

Follow the instructions here:

I had this same problem and after browsing the tar files on the iso image i discovered that it was listed with zero as if it was never included on the iso image in the first place.

this iso image is listed as

ESX Server 3i U2 Installable Refresh
Version 3.5 Update 2 | 110271 - 08/13/08      238 MB ISO image
md5sum: 166917dd82e8f581555979aa5934f38b(¹)

(after august 12th)

so I downloaded and extracted it from

http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmserver/VMware-server-e.x.p-63231.i386.tar.gz

using winrar and was able to connect and start managing my ESXI virtual  server

with ESX 4.1i  the link to download the vsphere client tries to go to the following address
http://vsphereclient.vmware.com/vsphereclient/2/5/8/9/0/2/VMware-viclient-all-4.1.0-258902.exe

Use HTTPS:// instead
using the same address except using https as below works just fine for downloading the file
https://vsphereclient.vmware.com/vsphereclient/2/5/8/9/0/2/VMware-viclient-all-4.1.0-258902.exe

We are having this issue with ESXi 4.1 build 260247

by: nathanwilliamsPosted on 2010-07-15 at 10:36:31ID: 33215389

from ESX 4.1 release notes
vSphere Client Removal from ESX/ESXi Builds. For ESX and ESXi, the vSphere Client is available for download from the VMware Web site. It is no longer packaged with builds of ESX and ESXi. After installing ESX and ESXi, users are directed to the download page on the VMware Web site to get the compatible vSphere Client for that release. The vSphere Client is still packaged with builds of vCenter Server. See the ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide, the ESXi Installable and vCenter Server Setup Guide, and the ESXi Embedded and vCenter Server Setup Guide.
