Which VMWare solution for personal use and server use?

Hi there;

I'd like to buy VmWare for my personal use...I am in search for the latest version of VmWare for standalone...Any link?

I again am in search for server use of VmWare? Any link?

A standalone one will suffice the server needs?

Best regards...

For Server use, VMWARE offers VMWare for Servers for free and now they offer ESXi for free as well.

As for personal use, VM workstation is not free,  but is an excellent product IMHO.     There are other options for virtualization on the desktop such as VirtualBox, or the Microsoft virtualPC.

Ok, but which one for server use?
VMware Infrastructure 3 or VMware ESXi or VMware Server

>>ESXi is an OS  that loads on a server instead of Windows.
2003 R2 i have got...So, it works smoothly on 2003 R2?

Thanks for the detailed information above...
If you have 2003 R2 and want to keep that, then use the VMWare Server ver 2.      The ESXi is a complete OS replacment so you would have to wipe your 2003 install and instead use ESXi.    You have to be 100% certain that the server hardware is on the ESXi compatability list.

Your answers are very satisfying...Thanks for that...

You mean format the machine and install ESXi...No host OS? Only ESXi? I mean a bootable cd with ESXi or something? What about preserving 2003 R2 and install ESXi having 2003 R2 as host?

Any link...

Also, we are planning to go to 2008? I know Hyper-V will be cool but exactly which VMWare? Again VMWare Server ver 2?

Best regards...and thanks for your patience...:)
Let me say, 2 servers will be operating as guest OS, 2003 or 2008 and Debian or Ubuntu or Centos
A file server, a web server(apache and IIS), a dns server, a mail server (maybe domain server can be added)...
ESXi downloads as a ISO image that will burn to a bootable CD.   Boot with that CD and follow instructions to load ESXi.   ESXi is the OS.  You would create the virtual machines in ESXi for your Guest OS's.

ESXi has a compatibility list included in this doc.

Also, all guides from VMWare are here for future reference:

ESXi would be the way to go, but I would recommend stating with Server ver 2 just to get familiar with virtualization, especially if this is your first exposure to it.

Perfect!
