I have downloaded putty and tried to connect but I get a logon denied. I did not create a seperate account on the VMWare server wen I set it up. I have just been using the root account for the console and connecting using the VMWare Infrastructure Client..
Everything I have been able to find so far requires physical access to the server to create a new account for SSH access. Is there any way to set this up form the VMWare Infrastructure client?

The tool which lars points out is quite handy sometimes. You also can connect with your vi client directly to your ESX server (you need root credentials to connect). From there create a user account which can putty, and then su/sudo with it. (the rootaccess wizard is much faster ofcourse, and the benefit is you can alter multiple esx hosts to keep them the same).
If you have a NAT between your host and VMs, I did it using "Virtual Network settings.." --> "NAT" --> "Port forwarding" options... I configured SSH connections perfectly doing a port forwarding for SSH port. Please read about port forwarding. it is quite simple to config. Also did the same with HTTP and administrative consoles for Checkpoint and Commerce Server. Hope this help...

You may need to create separate physical address for the guest system to access that system from outside network.
Alternately, you can connect to the host system and then connect the guest system through VMWare utils.
