Browse All TopicsWe have just installed VM Ware ESXi server 4 and we have created 10 virtual machines windows 2003. The application that we execute requires us to use the same computer name for each Virtual Machine. I am new to VM ware ESXi server and would like to know how to setup each VM machine on a different subnet so that there will be a no computer name conflict when we power on all the VM's. If possible any help or documentation to get me started is greatly appreciated also I am a beginner.

Setup etherchannel if you have Cisco. Configure a vswitch for your VM Network. Setup port groups per VLAN and configure the vswitch for ip hashing

assuming your only NIC is already assigned to the vswitch
create 10 port groups in your current vswitch and assign unique vlan id to each group
basically now your esxi is ready for multiple vlans
you just need to assign each VM vNIC to the desired vlan id
dont forget to configure truking on the physical switch, this allow your link to the switch to carry multiple vlans by using standard "trunking protocol" such as 802.1Q
you can now give each vlan a unique subnet id and specify your layer3 device as the gateway
for more information on vlan refer to http://www.vmware.com/pdf/
its a good doc as a start to understand vlan in esx
