Question

How to setup networking on VM Ware ESXi server 4

Asked by: tupac1979

We have just installed VM Ware ESXi server 4 and we have created 10 virtual machines windows 2003. The application that we execute requires us to use the same computer name for each Virtual Machine. I am new to VM ware ESXi server and would like to know how to setup each VM machine on a different subnet so that there will be a no computer name conflict when we power on all the VM's. If possible any help or documentation to get me started is greatly appreciated also I am a beginner.

How many pNICs (Physical NICs) do you have in each host ?

Do you have a Layer 2 or Layer 2 switching environment. Are you running VLANs on the switch side?

Thanks to answer the questions.
1. We have 1 NIC for each VM machine and only 1 NIC in the VM Ware ESXi server

2. We have layer 2 and layer 3 switches. We are running VLANS for each classroom that we have.

Thanks

I assume that you are using the pNIC for both Service Console and VM Traffic.

Is this a Testing or Production Environment ?

by: tupac1979Posted on 2009-07-28 at 06:06:45ID: 24960217

This is a testing environment but we are using the pNIC for both the Service Console and VM Traffic on the VM ESXi server.

These articles are helpful thanks. Also another question so I have to configure the switch that the VM Ware ESXi server is on to support the VLANS of each VM is on?

by: ryder0707Posted on 2009-07-28 at 06:22:41ID: 24960341

assuming your only NIC is already assigned to the vswitch
create 10 port groups in your current vswitch and assign unique vlan id to each group
basically now your esxi is ready for multiple vlans
you just need to assign each VM vNIC to the desired vlan id
dont forget to configure truking on the physical switch, this allow your link to the switch to carry multiple vlans by using standard "trunking protocol" such as 802.1Q
you can now give each vlan a unique subnet id and specify your layer3 device as the gateway
for more information on vlan refer to http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_vlan_wp.pdf
its a good doc as a start to understand vlan in esx

Thanks I see I understand the concept exactly but actually how to do it in VM ESXi server I guess will take some practice.

by: tupac1979Posted on 2009-07-28 at 06:47:55ID: 24960568

Also the VM's do not need to compete with each other but the students in the classroom will need to access the VM's from their classroom which are on different VLAN's.

Will the students be using Remote Desktop to access the VMs ?

by: tupac1979Posted on 2009-08-12 at 12:52:18ID: 31608691

We will use the switch instead.
