The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Suse wont' boot in vmware anymore. errors with "Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,2)"vm

Asked by brittonv in VMware, Linux, SuSE Linux

I just installed ESX4i on 2 IBM x3650 Servers.  I installed SuSE Enterprise Linux 9.3 on one server.

I installed the VMWare tools, then shut the VM Down and made some copies of the VM.  I made 4 copies.  I copied 2 to a identical server and and 2 on this one.

I installed WebSphere and DB2 on the 2 VM's in question.  Everything looked fine so I shut down the vm's and then powered down the server.  I then took them to the server room and installed them into a rack.

Now the 2 installations that were natively installed won't boot. (Where I installed Websphere and DB2).  However the 2 untouched installation on the other identical server still boot

The boot process seems to go fine until:

RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0

VFS: Cannot open root device "802" or unknown-block(8,2)

Please append a correct "root=" boot option

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,2)

Now I copied the one of the failed VM's to the ESXi 4.0 server that was still working.  However it failed exactly the same, so it isn't the hardware.

Can someone please tell me what I am supposed to do now!
