Question

Unable to use Console in VMWare Server 2.0.1

Asked by: Milleniumaire

I have downloaded and installed VMWare Server 2.0.1 onto a 64-bit laptop running Windows 7 RC.

The software runs and I've created a virtual machine in which I plan to install SuSE Linux 11.1 64 bit, unfortunately I'm unable to install the Console plug-in, so I can't get any further.

Originally I was using Google Chrome, but when clicking on the Console tab and then the Install plug-in, nothing was happening - no prompts to install the plugin.  I then switched to using Internet Explorer 8 (bundled with Windows 7 RC).  This time when clicking to install the plugin, it goes through the install process and runs vmware-vmrc-win32-x86.exe, which appears to install without problems.  The last thing it does is closes all Internet Explorer windows before finishing.

When I restart VMware Server and switch to the Console tab for my virtual machine it simply shows the "The VMware Remote Console Plug-in is not installed or could not be found" message and wants me to install the plug-in (again).  If I try it again it goes through the uninstall process!

Any idea what is going wrong?

As an aside, I noticed there is a desktop icon created by the VMware Server install named "VMware Server Home".  When I use this to start VMware Server it uses the url "https://lcsnotepad:8333/ui/" where lcsnotepad is the name of my machine.  A warning appears about the website's security certificate.  If I start VMware Server using the "All Program -> VMware -> VMware Web Access -> Web Access" menu option the url "http://127.0.0.1:8308/ui/#" is used and this doesn't display any warnings in Internet Explorer (or Google Chrome).

What is going on here?  Why are there different ways to start VMware Server? (not that it matters to me too much at the moment as I'm unable to get the console working using either method, therefore I can't install or use the guest linux o/s.

Have you tried running vmware-vmrc.exe manually and see if it behaves better outside the browser?

by: MilleniumairePosted on 2009-08-17 at 04:57:47ID: 25113391

Thanks for the suggestiong larstr.  I tried running the executable outside the browser but it makes no difference.  It went through exactly the same install process I see when clicking on "Install plug-in" on the console tab, but the console tab still wants me to install the plug-in.

I'm beginning to wonder if this is a Windows 7 issue!

Hi Milleniumaire, I've experienced this myself and I have to accept the Wink7 is not yet compatible for vmware server 2.0 in fact it is not officially supported by vmware as supported host OS
I end up installing vmware workstation 6.5 which works perfectly fine probably becoz vmwareWS is not relying on the web browser for the console
fyi, video & audio works fine in the vm as well
Cheers!

Thanks ryder0707, I'll give VMware Workstation a try.  I only tried VMware Server first because it was free!

Before installing VMware Workstation I thought I'd try installing version 3.5.2 of Firefox as I thought maybe this was a browser issue.

When I ran VMware Server using Firefox the plug-in installed first time and hey presto, the console is now available.  Successfully went on to install SuSE Linux 11.1 64-bit so I now have a virtualised linux o/s on Windows 7 RC.

Result!

I found a new solution guys, for Windows 7 compatiblity, very simple !
After installing the plugin following the normal steps,
- In IE 8.0, go in Tools -> Manage Add-ons ...
- Drop-down to the left, you first select "downloaded controls", you should then see your VmWare plugin, disabled. Right-click it and [Enable] it.
- Then right-click on it again, [More information]. Reading, you can notice the plugin is not allowed for any website. Simple solution is to allow it for all sites. The buttons to do that are just in the bottom of the window.

Close all IE windows and come back to VmWare and it should work fine !

Thanks for the info HoudWarZ, I'll give this a try when I get home as I've been using Firefox due to the issue with IE.

None of the above solutions worked for me.

I found that I had to use the 32 bit version of the browser, not the 64bit version. (I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2)

I was having the same problem and realized i was running the 64 bit version of IE9.  Running the 32 bit version of IE9 worked for me.  Thanks for the tip bevhost!
