Question

Networking Dual NICs in ESXi 4.0

Asked by: Stuart_Page

I have ESXi 4.0 installed on a Dell Poweredge T300, and I am attempting to set up my two nics on two separate networks.

Here's my plan: I want to set up NIC1 on my DMZ on an external IP, and NIC2 on my physical LAN. The reason for this is that I will be hosting two VM's: one will be a W2K3 server on the LAN only, and the other will be Linux web, POP, etc server that I would like to be on both the DMZ and the lan on to virtual nics.

But there's a problem. It seems that the default behavior for ESXi is to bond the two nics and assign one IP address. How do you set separate IP info for each nic?

I have attached a pdf diagram of what I'm trying to accomplish.

My apologies if someone has already asked this question, but I couldn't find this exact issue anywhere else. Thanks in advance.

Assign a NIC for each vSwitch
1st NIC for the LAN and the 2nd NIC for DMZ
For eg.
vSwitch0 - vmnic0 (LAN)
Mgmt & VM network1 port group

vSwitch1 - vmnic1 (DMZ)
VM network2 port group

Connect w2k3 VM to vSwitch0 & Linux to both vSwitch
That's all, and if you need to have comm between LAN & DMZ then you need to do routing

OK, now I'm pointed in the right direction. I've created my second vSwitch which is connected to vmnic.

Do vSwitches need to have an IP address assigned to them, and if so how is that done?

Thanks.

No, only the VM needs IP
