VM replication from SAN into Local ESXi datastore

Hi All,

I'd like to perform a backup syste which can perform replication from my SAN into the Local ESXi datastore,

I have 2x ESXi servers and one SAN, All of my ESXi local datastore is empty and got more capacity than the SAN VMFS LUN

can I make a realtime replication of all VM I've got in the SAN into the ESXi local datastore ? this is for a disaster recovery prevention in case the SAN got broken I can still start all of the VM in either one of ESXi Local datastore.

I know this is possible as we do the same for our exchange servers, but alas, i have no idea how to do it in practice.

yes by using SCR in Exchange Server 2007 right :-)

me too, i have no idea in implementing such feature in VMWare environment.

Any help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

This is possible with a few methods:

  1. You will need to have Virtual Center for ESX3.5 or vCenter for ESXi 4.  This will gallow you have have the VCB framework.  You wil then need to look at vReplicator or Veeam Fast SCP to schedule replications
     
  2. Another method would be to use the ghetto VCB script located here --> http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760

You can use Vizioncore or Veeam vReplicator without VCB but you you need to have the paid version of ESXi, it does not work with ESXi free.

Hi There, has anyone hereusing Veeam Backup and replciation 4.0 ?
it is said that it has support for ESXi 4.0 (paid ESXi) but i cannot select it as the replication target ?

One of the pitfalls of a beer budget with VMWare is that the enterprise feature from 3rd party vendors are borderline functional :(

yes, that is very true, I even cannot use the Veeam Backup as an appliance due to the restriction on hotadd features :-(
