I am unable to connect to a Cd drive on our Virtual Infrastructure 2.5 client from any VM. All indicate "The CD/DVD drive could not be connected". Additionally, when I edit hardware properties for the CD drive the "Connected" and "Conect at Power up" Status connections are grayed out.
Background;
- this has been operational in the past
- Windows can explore the drive content
- Server has been rebooted
- VMware tools are up to date, have tried updating VM's but no change.

One basic question... what is the option(in CD/DVD Drive) that is enable in the settings?
Because if is the client device, those options for the CD drive the "Connected" and "Connect at Power up" Status connections will be disable.
If so, you need to change to Datastore ISO File, or host device

Device type = Client Device, which I believe is required to access the CD drive on the VIC - correct?
When I change the Device type to "Host Device" or "Datastore ISO" the Status options (Connected, Connect on Power up)then become active/can be selected.
More expert advice would be appreciated.

Interesting (?) fact; if I open the VIC on another client I can connect VM's to the CD drive on that machine. Also one anomoly - going through the VM's this VIC indicated that TWO Vm's were connected (ie both had the Connect to CD/DVD drive indicating "Disconnect from CD/DVD").
The VIC on machine #1 did not indicate in any way that these Vm's had a current connection, other than the "Cannot connect..." error.
Attempting to disconnectthe servers from the CD drive on machine #2 seems to have caused the VM's to hang fro a few minutes during which we were unable to access. Once disconnected we are still unable to connect to the CD drive on machine/VIC #1.
Does this make sense to you?

First, if you choose Client Device, "Connected" and "Connect at Power up" will never be available. This is CD-ROM device from your machine that you are running the VI Client.
To use this, you need to open VM Console(open a windows independent from the VI Client, by click the Launch Machine Virtual Console icon). When you console indicates two connections are open, that is normal, because you have VM console open on VI Client, and Machine Virtual Console)
Tu use the CD-ROM from your machine to work in the VM, you need to click in the icon Connect CD/DVD 1, then choose to connect to your CD-ROM, or use a ISO in your machine.

I never seen this disabling without any human intervention.
But try to check the IDE devices in /root/vmware/guestOSname.v
This is for VMware 2.5, but it shows how to enable/disable IDE devices.

Enter in the VMware host console(With root) and check if the CD is enable in the vmx file for thar VM.
