With VMware you can run, yet keep in mind since the host os (the 32 bit) will only recognise a little over 3GB RAM, thus can the virtual 64 bit can find more ofcourse.
Maybe you can use VMware Player found on :

I this will answer your question.

I dont think so. In virtual enviroment you can only use hardware to the limits of the host or less.
On 64 bit host you acn run 32 or 64 bit guest, on 32 bit host only 32 bit guest.

I am not avare if there exists some 64to32 bit emulator.

Yes definitely can....1000% sure!
But you need a cpu that support Intel-VT or AMD-V to run 64bit guest OS on a 32bit OS
For example vmware workstation 7 is fully supported to run vSphere(64bit only OS)

I think the question here is can you run x64 on x32 hardware..the answer is no.  If it has Intel VT then it's x64.

I take my words back. (outdated info, Sorry)
ryder0707 and B-Byte are right.
Running 64 bit guest depends on your processor and not on guest OS.

Thanks guys for the discussion

Back to the main thread - what emulator supports this.

VMWare / Virtual PC - both?

If my host OS is XP on a 32 bit Intel box - what do I need if I want to install Windows 2003 64 bit?

I have an application that is 32 bit based that is having problems running in a Win2003 64 Bit environment and I need to setup a test environment to debug - I don't feel like buying a whole new machine just to do some simple debugging.

The whole point with emulation is a software implementation of a hardware device - theoretically any architecture can be emulated in software.

I have been out of the virtualization arena for a while so I am not up to speed with what is out there hence my post.

What I need to know is
a) Is there an emulator out there that will enable me to install Win2003 64 bit where the physical architecture is 32 Bit.
b) Is this available on XP
c) What is it and where can I get it?

Points awarded for answers to A) B) and C)

Thanks

VMWare will support this if your CPU supports Intel VT

b) Is this available on XP

Yes: VMWare Worksation 7 is your best bet but you can use VMWare Server

c) What is it and where can I get it?

VMWare Website
