ESX5: Run Windows 2012 server needs patch
Hi All,
I recently bought a new server and installed ESX 5 from the HP website.
Microsoft Windows Server 8 is listed as an OS, but when I use it the OS fails to load.
I found this KB, which seems to indicate a patch is needed.
This ESX server is the first I've built from scratch so could with a little help....
Many thanks

I don't think that ESXi 5 included a patch for windwos 8 yet, windwos 8 released to RTM yesterday and 2012 still pending.
You need to be using ESXi 5.0 U1 for Windows 8 and Windows 2012.
ESXi 5.0 U1 was released many months ago. 15 March 2012!
Download from the VMware Patch Portal

thanks hanc for point this out didn't know that U1 included 2012 support
Super cool, all what we need is the RTM on technet ;)
The latest build of ESXi 5.0 is Build Number: 768111, dowload the 500MB file, upload to your ESXi 5.0 server using WinSCP (http://winscp.net/eng/index.php).
Put host in Maintenance Mode (make sure you have a Backup of VMs!)
https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/OFFLINE/release-346-20120706-638484/ESXi500-201207001.zip
Upload to a vmfs datastore, and then login via SSH (putty), and execute the following command to update.....
esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/[DATASTORE]/ ESXi500-20 1207001.zi p
restart host, and Install 2012! (using Windows 8 as a VM template!)

The HP ISO i used was ESX5 U1 and does show Windows Server 8. I just noticed my KB is for Windows Desktop 8.
This KB seems more relevant.

I'm running build version 755629, which is the latest on the HP website. It does list Server 8, so I'm pretty sure it should work. Just I'm not doing something right.

I would upgrade to 768111, and then select Microsoft Windows Server 8 (64 bit)

Just giving EFI a try now.
Does the update delete all the VM's? As I have a couple on there that i'm not too bothered about. So would happily risk losing them, over waiting 2 hours.
Also, will this overwrite the HP ISO or update it, as I guess they optimise things for Insight Manager ?

The update just updates the files it needs to update.
It will not delete VMs, but you should always have Backup before any server change!

Volume Customers already have the final release!
MSDN and Technet Subscribers, are likely to get a few days before.

EFI BOIS Mode was all it needed.
Many thanks. I'll give the ESX update a whirl this afternoon.
