Covert VMware virtual machine/template from eager zero to lazy zero

I have a vmware virtual machine/template that is currenly set as eager zero. I am trying to convert it over to lazy zero however it does not seem to be taking.

So far I have tried

1. Storage Vmotion selecting thick lazy zero as the format. (The vmotion completes however the disk is still eager zero)
2. I have tried cloning the VM and setting the format as lazy zero (the clone completed however the disk is still eager zero)

Is there any way to get this vm/template to lazy zero?

The only thing coming to mind at the moment is converting the machine with VMware converter... A v2v so to speak.
This would normally allow you to change the disk from thick to thin, when that is done you could opt to change it to lazy zeroed later.

Eager zero and lazy zero needs some sort of thin provisioning in underlying storage, invisible to vmware. If on ISCSI there is no difference in consumed size, just that blank spaces are either zeroed while copying or left unwritten. in later case obviously thin provisioning on storage backing LUN has a chance to do something.

one can do vmotion without converter and convert disk format.
