hyper v or vmware
I was going to make a sharepoint dev vm and was thinking of using vmware server instead of my hyper v box so I could move the image around on an external hard drive and wouldn't have to run server 2008 all the time. If I wanted to run it on hyper v how would that work? How can you convert between hyper v and vmware? Is it easier to go one way vs the other? Should I start with hyper v then go to vmware?

hyper-v is nice cause it's free, and super easy. You should be able to carry around your image as you say, but you'll have trouble with performance. You'd need a hyper-v server to run it in, and not import it but configure Hyper-v to use the image path to your device. In the end it should work, but I sure haven't done it. Clever idea.

The reason I didn't want to use vmware in the beginning was because I tried on a hyper v machine and it said they could not install at the same time. Can you run them both on the same machine?
