Js & CKG - UPS to gracefully shutdown ESXi and VMs
There was an incident where one of my client's site had a power trip on Saturday.
Everything was down but when they came back to work on Monday, the three VMs were inaccessible.
We had to force shutdown the server again before users are able to login to the VM server to do their work.
My boss wants me to configure the current UPS so that in an event of a power trip, the UPS can get the ESXi and it's virtual machines to shutdown gracefully.
Any idea how this can be done.
I saw methods like downloading and using another virtual machine, which is the better way where it does not involve any cost?

Also we need to understand, if you are using the FREE version of ESXi, e.g. you've not paid for a license from VMware for it.

It is free license. I am not sure about the UPS model, but it should be appropriate for it to be used for the shutdown as my boss knows their inventory equipment.
This great workaround may solve your issue:

Sounds complicated. is there any method where I do not have to do any physical changing as I am only able to access the machine remotely via RDP?
You will be limited in what you can do with the ESXi free license, and access via RDP only.

Hi! Andrew,
I need to go and see how the UPS is connected to the server currently, then I will let you know.
I was told that the console of the ESXi needs to be accessed physically, how do I go about doing that as I have never touched an ESXI before.

You don't need to access the console, you may need to enable SSH, for remote access to the ESXi server.

The Server's two power plugs are connected to the Smart UPS 1500.
But I don't see any connection from the UPS to anything else like a USB to RJ45 connection.

There needs to be some connection from the UPS, either via USB or Serial, or using a Network Management card which is supported in the Smart UPS 1500.
Once you have sorted out the physical connection of UPS, you should be able to follow the links posted.
Please note, that ESXi FREE version, does not support UPS connections well.... and the links posted are workarounds!

That's a new question, and unrelated to the initial question. Please post a new question.
