Question

XenServer 5.5 sits at boot prompt

Asked by: Jacob78

I just installed XenServer 5.5 and when the server is powered up, it sits at the boot: prompt until I hit enter. I've been using XenServer 5.0 for a while, which automatically starts when the server is powered up.

Any idea on what's causing this? I've tried on two separate servers, same result.

Couple of guesses:

Is the CD still in the drive?

When you did the install, did you accept all of the defaults, or did you customize?  Specifically, did you add anything to the boot parameters line during the install?

by: Jacob78Posted on 2009-08-31 at 12:41:43ID: 25225720

The CD is not in the drive. I did the standard install, no customization or changes of any kind. I accepted all of the defaults (just like I did when installing XenServer 5.0).

I tried this first on a Dell PowerEdge 1950, then on a 2950 - same results - it sits at the boot prompt until I hit enter, then XenServer begins to load.

If I reinstall XenServer 5.0, it works just fine.

Could you post the contents of /boot/extlinux.conf from that server?

by: Kentrix70Posted on 2009-09-03 at 00:09:05ID: 25248389

You should try to download another ISO-image (vers. 5.5), burn it to a new cd,
and then try again.

by: Jacob78Posted on 2009-09-08 at 08:31:10ID: 25282905

I downloaded the ISO again and reinstalled from scratch - same result. The server sits at boot: prompt until you hit enter.

Again, could you post the contents of /boot/extlinux.conf from that server?

Toxic,

I have little experience with the command line side. How do I access this config file?

by: ToxicPigPosted on 2009-09-10 at 12:17:36ID: 25303317

In XenCenter, hit the console tab for the server in question.  Hit enter.  You will have a command prompt.  Type:

cat /boot/extlinux.conf

Highlight what prints out, right-click, select copy, and paste here.  Mouse wheel or page up will scroll if the output scrolls out of the terminal window.

Your extlinux.conf looks just like mine (On my own Xenserver),
so I believe the problem is something else.

I think the problem is related to the boot sector of your servers (I understand that you have been running Xenserver 5.0 on both servers before).
Could you please wipe the bootsector with some other product (Linux or Windows),
and then try a fresh install again.
Are there anything related to BootSectorProtection switched on in your BIOS.

/Kent.

by: ToxicPigPosted on 2009-09-18 at 13:59:05ID: 25369922

The boot sector gets overwritten every time you install.  Windows, Linux, or Xenserver will all replace the MBR with what they want in it.  The fact that it boots, but only after manual intervention means that it gets there, but waits for something.  Specifically, I was looking for the timeout.  From above, you COULD change to prompt 0, and that shouldn't prompt you at all.  Might be bad if you should happen to need one of the other kernels to boot from, though.  The only thing that I see that's different from my config is the serial configuration.  The default kernel (label xe) doesn't have the serial config in it, so you're safe there.  Try commenting out line 2:  serial 0 115200.  Just edit the file and put a # sign in front of it.  It could be that it's waiting for some input on the serial console.  Are you using the serial port at all?
