Question

Dragon NaturallySpeaking is not dictating to Outlook...

Asked by: deekmartin

all of a sudden my Dragon NaturallySpeaking preferred 9 has stopped dictating to Windows Outlook.
It still dictates to the subject line but will not put text in the e-mail body.  I dictate to DragonPad then cut and paste.. I don't understand why it would stop working in Outlook...

Secondary questions
on a keyboard that does not have a number pad as in a laptop.. how can I toggle the microphoneon and off with the key...?

if I inadvertently forget the mic on how can I force a shutdown for everything it is trying to write..?

when I use Dragon and as a command, what is the voice command for left click and for right-click..?

The best place to look for tutorials is usually a further education establishment's website, although there are always those individuals who dedicate time to help others.  Here's what I got in google searches.   It shouldn't take long to quickly evaluate if any of the tutorials are likely to be in-depth enough for your needs.

If it can handle "myocardial infarction" or "parietal occipital" by dictation, then I suppose it will do for most uses :-)

PDF and other format download links:

Reasonably good introductory textual content, but sadly screenshot images don't show for me:

What you really need is the User Manual.  Didn't you get one with the software?

I found an online one in Amazon's PDF Reader, but it's for version 7:

In fact, here's a link for the User Guide and Quick Reference card for all versions of Dragon Naturally Speaking 9:

There are also some downloads here, including a removal tool should you need to uninstall the software, cleanup, and reinstall it:

No, unfortunately I don't know the answers to your specific questions off the top of my head because I haven't used Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred version 9.

The first thing I would do though, is consult the user manual, because Left-Click and Right-Click require different voice commands depending on whether the action is required on the Desktop, Dialogs, Windows Explorer, etc.
Example:
Left Click = "Mouse Click"
Right Click = "Press Shift F10"
may not work everywhere, but will work in some areas.

The commands are well described and detailed in the user manual for these different working areas.  I don't mean to sound patronising or cheeky, but learning the voice commands without having to resort to notes is the hardest part of using the program, and probably the main reason most people end up shelving it as being more bother than it's worth.

Generally when a program stops doing something it has been able to do, the logical thing to do is attempt a Repair Installation.  The installer conforms to the Windows Installer (msiexec.exe) routine, so your Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs will offer you the option to Remove (Uninstall), Repair, and also the option to Add or Remove Components (Modify).

Performing a Repair should be the first step.  If that fails to fix the issue, then Uninstalling fully, rebooting, and Reinstalling should come next.  If I'm going to that extent, and if such a tool is available, I will run a cleanup tool after uninstalling.

I posted a link to the downloads page with a note that there is such a cleanup utility for Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 (DNS9).  Here's the direct links:

http://ct.scansoft.com/customerfiles/kbasefiles/5548/DNS91remover.exe

"This utility was created to remove the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.1 program files from your system. Only run this utility if the regular Uninstall process does not successfully remove Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.1 from the system. Save this file to the windows desktop. Before running this utility, back up your user profile. After running this utility, reboot the machine and Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.1 will be uninstalled. Note: On a machine with restricted user rights, log into the machine with administrator rights before running this utility."

As stated in the above description it is a good idea to locate the user-created files generated through using the program and back them up before repairing or uninstalling/reinstalling.  I believe you will find the files here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9\Users\<UserName>\current\

The program apparently gives you the option to export your user profile files and defaults to:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9\Users\<UserName>\Backup

You should consult the user manual for full details of what files are stored in what folders.  Page 20 of the printed manual, and page 28 of the PDF manual.

>>> "a huge complicated program like dragon has no simple videos accessable to learn the program" <<<

It's got a very comprehensive user manual.  What other tutorials does it have?

No problems Deek.  Let us know how you get on.
Rather you than me, I have to say, because I tried and gave up with speech recognition software quite a while ago.

Technology has come a long way since then, but I found it a laborious process training the voice recognition and balancing the microphone so as to make my voice loud enough but eliminate background noise and breathy hisses and pops from confusing it.

None of these programs have options that align them to the vowel or hard "r" sounds of my Scottish accent, so I ended up sitting speaking like an Englishman, which I found very strange indeed :-)
