Question

Windows installer starting by itelf.

Asked by: ChristopherNls

Hi Experts:

I just installed a new program, Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.0 , (speech-to-text) a few days ago.
Now, when I start another program, PaperPort 11.0 (from the same vendor: Nuance) Windows installer starts with "please wait while Windows Installer configures Dragon Naturally Speaking."  Its already configured, stupid!  I haven't let it complete, and I always have difficulty closing it through Task Manager.

I have occasionally seen this happen with other programs as well.  I'd rather not uninstall\reinstall DNS, as I had some trouble installing it the first time: 3 times an error message from WinVerifyTrust said that a certain .cab file was corrupt, or didn't have the correct signature  or some such.

When that happened, the DNS install halted an rolled back.

The 4th time was the charm, as DNS 10.0 installed without argument from WinVerifyTrust, (no error message) and went on to work perfectly.

I use a registry cleaner, JV-Power Tools, and wonder if perhaps it removed a piece of something it shouldn't have.  I make backups of what was removed, but don't look forward to reading through dozens of them without even knowing for sure what I am looking for.

System: Toshiba Satellite A65, Windows XP Pro, 1.4 gig RAM, system well-maintained by me, Antispyware, AV, Zone Alarm, regular defrag, registry cleaning, yada yada.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Do you have the Windows CD ? If so, put it in the CD and run this command sfc /scannow

It basically checks for windows files. See if it gets you to somewhere.

Cheers,
Rajesh

Just as a test I would be tempted to go to control panel --> user accounts --> create new user

make a new admin user and see if you have the same issues with regards to launching dragon naturally speaking.

Also is this the latest version of windows installer ?

obviously after creating the new user you need to log off of your account and log on as the newly created user and then try it.

Are you running PaperPort from within the same user profile as DNS was installed (and vice versa)?
If not, then try a Repair of PaperPort while booted into the same profile as you were in when you installed DNS.
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > choose "Repair" option after selecting PaperPort.

My assumption here is that there are some per-user settings needing modification that were not configured originally in PaperPort.

The only other thing I can think of is the following educated guess.

Nuance PaperPort was originally installed with the option to support speech commands, but in the absence of an installed program that could do this, that feature just remained unused and unconfigured.

Having now installed DNS, PaperPort detects that there is a program installed that supports voice commands, and is trying to configure DNS to work with PaperPort.  Given that you did have some problems with the *.CAB files when installing DNS, and given the possibility that the DNS configuration process is possibly looking for some source files, it keeps tryingto install the components required.

Have you looked in your Event Viewer for instances of the Windows Installer to see if it provides any more detail?

Right-Click My Computer > "Manage" > open Event Viewer.
Look in the "Application" log under the "Source" column for "MsiInstaller" event 11728 listings that correspond with the last time this occurred.
Double-Click on it and see what it says.

Hi everybody:

Sorry for the delayed response.  just for fun and chuckles  I allowed DNS to continue its own reinstall .  it asked me for the installation desk, which I supplied, and went on to configure itself just fine.

BillDll, you may have been correct, if about some kind of interference or relationship between PaperPort and DNS.  .  I used PaperPort today and it didn't ask for the DNS installation disk.

I looked in my event viewer and found two instances of event 11728 which referred to DNS installation success.  I also found a number of instances of event 11729, which referred to DNS installation failure.  Why it failed 9 times but succeeded twice isn't at all clear.  It seems to work fine now.

But this leads me to wonder if I have a damaged Windows Installer file.  Is there a way to uninstall/clean up the old and install a new copy, perhaps of a later build?

There is also that instance of WinVerifyTrust first rejecting then accepting a certain .CAB file on the install disk.  Obviously nothing could have changed on the disk, so something changed on my machine... a read error of some kind?  I cleaned the optical drive with a WalMart grade laser lens cleaner put out by Panasonic before I first tried (and failed) to install DNS 10.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Christopher

I'll address the issue of the Installation cleanup first:
"Is there a way to uninstall/clean up the old and install a new copy, perhaps of a later build?"

The Microsoft suggested way to clean up programs that were installed by the Windows Installer (msiexec.exe), but which either failed to completely install or uninstall and may be preventing reinstallation of the same software, is with the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe

Be sure you are aware of what it can and cannot do.  It is not intended as an alternative to the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, but rather as a post install/uninstall cleanup AFTER using Add/Remove Programs, or where Add/Remove Programs is not doing its job.  When installed and run, this tool should present you with a list of software titles that it will try to remove remaining leftovers from.

>>> "I also found a number of instances of event 11729, which referred to DNS installation failure.  Why it failed 9 times but succeeded twice isn't at all clear" <<<

If you double-click on the "MsiInstaller" events (11728), you should be presented with a dialog that gives a very brief description of the issue.  There is a small "Copy" icon towards the right that you can use to copy that part of the error and paste to Notepad.  There will be a hyperlink entitled "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp".  Click on that and wait for the Help and Support Center to open with (hopefully) some additional details that can be copied.

If any other apparently useful info can be gathered that way, then perhaps we might be able to shed some light on the likely cause.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms681381(VS.85).aspx

I've never been a big fan of CD Lens Cleaning CDs used on a regular basis, but in the circumstances it was a logical and good troubleshooting step.  There are other potential issues with CD-Rom/DVD-Rom drives though.  I had one a while back that span up very fast and there was a slight ut unnerving vibration that could be mistaken for general buzzing of a loose case side or something.  It was a mid-range case and the meal forming the CD Drive cages wasn't very stiff.

After a couple of failed installs of different software from different CDs I figured it was definitely attributable to the drive or the way it was mounted.  I relaxed the screws and braced the cage with thin but stiff sticks of stainless steel, then tightened the screws in again.  That fixed the issue immediately.  I believe that the read errors were caused by the acceleration and torque of that drive bending the thin soft metal of the drive cage just enough to start up a vibration that caused skipping and bad reads.

This is one of the reasons, as well as noise suppression, that some of the older good Compaq PCs and many new PCs have rubber mounting grommets in place of or acting as flexible washers for the screws.

The best way to test for CD-Rom read issues is to copy the entire CD to a folder on your hard drive (if you can spare the space), and then run setup from there.  It's usually better to leave the setup source files where you copied them after installation.  That way, if you need to use Add/emove Programs to perform a repair or to add or remove optional components of that software, the CD files are still where the registry will tell Windows to look.

You mentioned the WinVerifyTrust message about a certain *.CAB file being rejected then accepted.  It most probably just stems from a bad read of the CAB file, but there are tools that allow you to use the standard Windows Authentication Verification Policy to check and see if a file is correctly signed with a security signature, but it means installing the .NET 2.0 Development Kit or other SDK so you have the program file "SignTool.exe" at your disposal.

signtool verify /pa e:\path_to\filename.cab

This would perform a standard check.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa368288(VS.85).aspx

If you were really paranoid or concerned, the program C:\Windows\system32\sigverif.exe allows you to scan for and report digitally unsigned files.

If you are still plagued by Windows Installer problems, then it may be useful to create a verbose log file that you can inspect and try to pinpoint the precise issue.  Most "setup.exe" packages for software that installs with the Windows msiexec.exe installer will accept standard command line options.  Many of these are common to InstallShield packages because they interact with msiexec.exe.  A command like this should normally create a verbose setup log file in your own profile's TEMP folder:

Setup.exe /verbose"%TEMP%\filename.log"
or
Setup.exe /lv"%TEMP%\filename.log"

Note the lack of a space after the /verbose switch. It doesn't work if you leave a space.

Hopefully this helps.
Bill

Bill:

Thanks for your most informative and detailed help posting. Currently I am out of state and don't have the drive with me to test, (it is an external usb drive to replace my malfunctioning drive on my laptop,) but I will check it out when I return.

I don't have a lot of spare space on my tiny 60 gig laptop drive, but I can save the install to some much larger external storage I have with a firewire interface,  and and can test things from there.

Thanks  for your help, along  with everyone else who has contributed so far.

rsivanandan: Thanks for your suggestion re sfc /scannow. I do use this now and then, (no set schedule...basically when I think of it or have a particular problem) and this was one of those times. The strange this is that on my Toshiba Satellite laptop scannow never asks for the windows cd to repair a file, yet on my other machine (a Dell desktop) it always asks for it. Perhaps the Toshiba has the necessary file cache stashed away somewhere? Unfortunately sfc /scannow didn't resolve this particular problem.

Ok, then I guess you better download the install the latest windows installer and see if that takes away the problem.

This is the last resort, but lets try it out.

Cheers,
Rajesh

Billdl: Thanks for your extensive and detailed help.  I didn't take apart my cd drive to shim up any mounting screws, <  I relaxed the screws and braced the cage with thin but stiff sticks of stainless steel...> but installed the program yet again "flat" from a copy on my hard drive, and it worked fine.  The interesting thing is that this was also one of the solutions offered by Nuance support which was just posted very recently.  Maybe they read your solution!

Thanks again.
