Question

Dragon NaturallySpeaking won't install on my Windows Vista 64-bit operating system

Asked by: Thekiddotus

hello I have Windows Vista ultimate 64-bit edition operating system and I just purchased a brand-new copy of Dragon naturally speaking version 10 preferred edition.

However when I tried to install on my laptop or my main desktop both tell me it cannot install due to that my Opera system is a 64-bit operative system both my laptop which is the gateway and my desktop which is a custom-built computer are 64-bit operative system with Windows Vista ultimate 64-bit edition.

Currently I have it installed on my home server which is a 32-bit operating system. But I do not really want it stalled on my home server as the one of you would use it on my main desktop and or computer I mean laptop. Is there any way that there's a workaround to get the version 10 installed on a 64-bit operating system. Or possibly some patch of some sort?

Thanks in advance.

I did a little searching, and I found this for version 9.51. I don't know if it will work for version 10, but you can give it a try: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_102-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=280578&messageID=2765366#2765366

Ok thanks but where do i get Orca and what is that ?

by: ZylochPosted on 2009-01-15 at 18:11:42ID: 23389859

You can get Orca from http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2004/07/12/180792.aspx. It is used to get rid of the check for 32-bit Windows that Dragon NaturallySpeaking does in its installer.

Is there another reference to 64-bit in Orca that you can remove?

by: ThekiddotusPosted on 2009-01-15 at 18:51:51ID: 23389993

No not that i know where to find. I looked in Orca and did not see anything other then the NT64 thing but did not see anything else do you know where i can look for others did you see the attached photo of what i got in message from DNS ?

by: ZylochPosted on 2009-01-15 at 19:30:03ID: 23390114

Yes, I saw it. It was another error message, which is why I thought there might be another place you need to tweak the installer in Orca. In a few of the following posts in the thread Brum07 and I linked to, people had to drop a few more entries. See if those help you out. (Also keep in mind that 10 might be different from the 9.51 that the people on that forum had)

i really like to use this software i spent a lot of money on it and can not return and i dont want to go to a 32 bit os as i have 8 gb of ram and 32 bit wont support that.

I think you're out of luck Thekiddotus. I got caught too, fortunately only with a trial version.
This was brought up here on EE a few days ago:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Voice_Recognition/Dragon_NaturallySpeaking/Q_24126847.html

Version 10 is NOT 64-bit compatible and the workarounds which work with V9 don't work with V10.

Here's a quote from Peter Mahoney, vice president and general manager, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Nuance Communications
.

"... Dragon 10 is not compatible with Vista 64 at this point. You are also correct that we check the installed operating system before we installed Dragon 10 on your computer. We do not recommend that you modify the installer. If you do, while Dragon may install, it will probably exhibit some unexpected behavior and we may not be able to support you.
When we started planning this latest version of Dragon, the penetration of 64-bit versions of Windows Vista was extremely small. In fact, most industry analysts also projected that the penetration of 64-bit operating systems would continue to be extremely small. Based on that information, we decided to release the 32-bit version of Dragon 10 first and follow up with a 64-bit version as soon as we could. Since that time, the adoption rate of 64-bit operating systems has accelerated significantly. We are committed to providing support as soon as possible. We have not announced a specific date for this release yet, but we will be sending out announcements to our registered customers and people who opt in to communications about Dragon on our website.
The work required to support 64-bit operating systems for this kind of application is not trivial. Dragon is an application that interfaces with many other applications on your desktop. And because not every application behaves as you might expect, especially when you factor in 64-bit versions of these applications, the testing required to deliver a high-quality product is not insignificant.
The bottom line is that we know that Vista 64 is important to our customers and we are committed to supporting it. I appreciate your interest in this topic please let me know if you have any additional questions........"

It's outrageous that such expensive software should be marketed without making it very clear that it's not 64-bit compatible. 64-bit systems have been in existence for many years and with the advent of Vista and recent versions of programs like Photoshop there's a need for 64-bit to enable support for more than 3GB of RAM.

64-bit Vista use is rowing exponentially. It's time these people got their act together.

Yeah so this sucks i cant return it and on the box it never said anything about not working with 64bit it just said work with windows xp and VISTA and i think ok i have vista and it says it works does not say that it does with Vista 64 bit but did not say it did not either so i thought should be fine.

Since many other software titles are.

Boy was i wrong =o(

And i cant downgrade to 32bit cause then my 8GB memory be useless =o(
