re-generate or restore private key to IIS

Asked by innovateusa in Microsoft IIS Web Server, Windows 2003 Server

Tags: Microsoft, IIS, 6.0, Small Business Server 2003 SP2

I was trying to fix a public folder issue and ended up generating a new ssl cert.  I need to restore my 3rd party issued certificate but not sure how.  I get this error:
"The SSL server credential's certificate does not have a private key information property attached to it. This most often occurs when a certificate is backed up incorrectly and then later restored. This message can also indicate a certificate enrollment failure."

I have the original server request and the .cer file, I think the server has now generated a new request and it doesn't match the cer file.  How do I put the original back?  Do I need to contact the place that issued the certificate and have them re-issue it with a new server request?  Is that usually free or would I be better with a new cert all-together (the place it is issued at now is a bit expensive).
